SoCal judges vote the highest and the lowest. I think a case can be made from the data that SoCal judges are more inconsistant than NorCal judges. Or.... the product that is put in front of the SoCal judges is more inconsistant than the product presented up north!

Crunched the numbers as far back as KCBS has them which is 2007. Between 2007 and 2010 NorCal and SoCal judges actually traded back and forth highest scoring numbers three times with 2010 being a down cycle for the North.
Since 2010 both NorCal and SoCal have been steadily increasing their averaged scores with NorCal slowly closing the gap with SoCal to where northern judges are within 7 points of southern judges in average high scores.
Steph's 690 at Arcadia was the highest score in CA history that I could find on the KCBS website.

the problem is that you dont se the wieghting on the data....it means nothing without a relative strength component. One thing you will notice is that California is allergic to 180's

Not sure you can make a case that the numbers mean nothing without the weighting data attached. The numbers above show trends.

I think the important take aways are:
  1. Scoring in both regions in CA have been trending upward since 2010 with higher score averages
  2. The gap in scoring between north and south is narrowing each year
  3. The number of contests is growing!

What is the 138 in chicken you were referring to earlier?

what is being discussed in the judging tent regarding food....before during or after it is judged?

After scoring of each category has completed and all scorecards have been handed to the table captain, we are allowed to discuss our impressions, opinions, scores etc with the other judges at the table regarding what we just sampled.

Steph received the 138 winning chicken score you're referring to at Sac? What did you score in the #2 spot? You guys did great in chicken but got hammered in the remaining cats.

I was in the tent that day and can tell you that didn't happen. Although I wish that were true so that I could point to them for the low scores but it was 100% CBJ. Maybe some Sams Club folks filled in for the CBJ no shows. Absolutely NOT mostly Sams employees.

The application process to judge that event was different from all others I've been in. We had to apply through a website at a specific time and specific day to reserve a seat. Probably the same as you guys did to reserve a spot to cook the event.

Great work on data.I don,t feel good the disputed judging was in sac. but all we can do is correct our mistakes. Seems like there's corrections to be made on both sides. But it also appears corrections have been made,I'm sure nation wide there is always room for improvement.I'm sure education is a big part of it.

Thanks Dave. Judges in the North have a ways to go to catch up with southern judges in throwing out 9's but the gap is narrowing and the cream seems to rise to the top in northern contests.

Another thought is being sac is a "cow town" And the local homegrown meat is way above any store bought maybe the bar is just higher depending on the quality your comparing to.
