Just booked a cruise to Alaska out of Seattle this August. Have a little time to kill on the trip back. Anyone from Seattle have a good place for lunch near the port area? I thinks it is port 91
Big fan of downtown Seattle here. Never been there by boat though. Any where down by pike place is cool for walking around and checking things out. Being from Canada, I am quite envious of the deals that go on especially during happy hours.
I would strongly suggest that you take in Pike's Place Market - you can walk there from the boat. It is truly *the* Seattle experience when it comes to food and lifestyle. As for eating.. seafood is where it's at. It really depends on what you want - upscale fine dining, the best food in town, or a real Seattle experience (some of the oldest and most iconic places on the waterfront don't have the best food IMHO, but you get the experience of old town).
As flypig said - are you looking for a meet and greet, or just some ideas to take the family..??
Maybe the most iconic is Ivars (the old original that was run by Ivar - not the relatively new chain.. sad story for sure!) - it is an open air, walk up off the sidewalk greasey fish and chips place. It is right down on the waterfront and easy walking distance from Pier 91.
Pier 91 is approx. 2.5-3 miles from downtown Seattle in a commercial and residential area. There are quite a few restaurants in and around downtown Seattle and if you're staying there you could always grab an early lunch and take a taxi to the pier, probably 10-15 min trip from the downtown area. The Alaska cruises are fantastic and I'm sure you'll have a great time! FYI...Check in can be very chaotic and we paid I think 20.00 to have porter take our bags for us. We were able to bypass the huge lines of people waiting to check their bags and moved directly to check in, probably saved us 30-45 min.
Rick - Seattle is my hometown and even though we moved away 30 years ago (to Portland) we're still up there quite a bit.
You really can't go wrong hanging down around the waterfront. As others have said, do Pike Place Market, walk the waterfront, and in general just be a tourist. You'll have a blast. Something we still enjoy is (depending on how much time you have) to take a Washington State Ferry over to Bremerton. It's about a 2 hour (total round trip) ride, and you're able to see Seattle from the water. Far and away the best views of Seattle are from the water. Plus you'll get to see some old Navy ships in Bremerton. And if you grab some chinese food for the trip, you will have spent a wonderful afternoon on Puget Sound.
That's my tip for you. Oh, and you're really going to dig Alaska.
