Has anyone tried the charcoal flavored pellets on the MAK 2 STAR? I would ultimately like to use these for grilling steaks etc but want to know what type of temps to expect compared to oak or hickory. Thanks!
The feedback I have received is they burn really low temps and build a lot of ash but have good charcoal flavor. I have not burned them here at MAK, I am sure others will chime in on there experience.
I've used them, yes. Very little smoke output, so I usually mixed them with Hickory or whatever else I had on hand. I didn't notice the amount of ash they generated, as it was a full weekend of cooking.
One thing to note is that they are VERY hard. I bounced mine off of the sidewalk a few times to bust them up so the auger wouldn't struggle as much.
I used them as well, thinking they would burn hot for grilling. I had trouble getting to the higher temps I like for searing. I haven't tried them in a reverse sear scenario yet - if I do I'll use the charcoal for charcoal flavor, and oak for high temp.
