Hungry for Ham

Looking to smoke, cook, bake ? a Ham this weekend. i don't have a clue what to buy. Should I look for a uncooked ham, or should I just heat up a pre-cooked one?
Any suggestions, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Are you wanting to cure & smoke a homemade ham? if so, you need to get cracking. You need a minimum of two days for wet curing after injecting thoroughly.

Otherwise, your best bet is to pickup an already cured & smoked ham to roast in your grill.

I cooked a cured uncooked ham for Christmas - it was AWESOME!

I warmed a cured and cooked ham for New Years and it was not so great - certainly not bad, but definitely nothing like the Christmas ham.

So I think you know what my suggestion is..

Thanks for the info.
TentHunter, I know I won't have time to cure and smoke a homemade ham, but at some point I wold like to try it. So I think I will try the cured uncooked suggested by Kite.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

I wasn' t able to find a cured - uncooked ham. I called several butchers and they said they could order one. Apparently they don't have much demand for them at this time of year.
I heated up precooked spiral cut and glazed it according to instructions. It was ok but nothing special.

I think the key with those is to make your own glaze..... maple brown sugar a little pepper of some sort to keep them guessin....

Be sure to give it a try. It requires very little equipment: an injector and some kind of a food-safe container or brining bag to hold the ham or shoulder you're curing.

The only special ingredient is the Curing Salt #1 (prague powder #1, Instacure #1, etc.), pretty easy to find!

The flavor is well worth it and besides it's sort of neat taking a fresh cut of pork and turning it into a finished product like a ham.

Absolutely - go to Big Poppa Smokers website and click on recipes. Search for Ham and biscuits. Some of the best ham I've made due to the glaze (JD with brown sugar).

Have fun with it......tbone

That's a great recipe, that's using an already cured ham. Jeanie is such a great cook!

Greg, Here are a few hams that we've cured, smoked & posted:

I actually started putting together a Ham-Brining 101 post with all the basic steps, but got really busy and forgot about it until just now. I will try to get it finished and posted.
