Meat Prices.

I don't know about you guys, but I can't believe how meat prices are soaring around here, especially at the grocery stores where most folks get their meats.

I saw Chuck & Round roasts going for $4 - $5/lb. YIKES!!! Last year those same cuts were going for $2.29 - $2.79/lb. Brisket flats were happily priced at $5.49/lb.

Yesterday, I needed a bunch of pork for sausage making and the cheapest pork cuts I could find at the DISCOUNT grocer were over $3/lb. It was well worth the 15 minute drive to the meat packer for a 50 lb. case of whole pork shoulder for $1.49/lb.

What are meat prices like in your area; are they soaring where you live as well?

I am headed to our local grocery store (Harris Teeter) because they have Boston Butts, on sale, for $1.29 per pound. Since I have room in my freezer, I may pick up a few. I just made 12 pounds of brats that have been smoked, vacuum sealed and in the freezer. I want to make some more kielbasa since it was such a hit earlier.

Meat prices have been outrageous lately. I was surpised at the sale today. With the MAK I have been looking for the lesser known/cheaper cuts that I can cook low-n-slow.

Yep, same thing here. Might be worth a trip to Restaurant Depot... (and an investment in another fridge/freezer)

Chickens are cheap, though. $1/lb for split chicken breasts. (next week the other chicken pieces/parts will be on sale) Whole fryers for 69 cents/lb tomorrow & Saturday.

Last year we could get butts on sale at R.D. for .96/lb. At the Grocery store for $1.09. Today.... $1.59 is the sale and $1.88 is the reg. price. That is eclipsing double the price... if you aren't buying on sale.

Briskets are up a lil bit.... Steaks - striploins/prime rib roasts, etc, seem to be about the same... it appears to be the cheaper cuts of meat taking the hit. Brisket flats are waaaay up too.

the entire beef market is crazy........Strube has held their prices but brisket sizes are way down as they are slughtering sooner....the bbq people get mad at us because they cant order a 17 pound brisket they are lucky to get 10 a good way to tell the beef market is by the size of the briskets.

Here's my two cents, the beef, pork and chicken markets are driven by supply and demand. During the summer months demand is up for beef, especially the middle meats. This year though, prices have been extremely high across the board on beef as well as pork. Simply put the large companies are not producing as much product, that along with high transportation cost, higher export markets due largely to the weak dollar have caused a very strong market. For example McDonalds grinds hundeds of thousands of pounds of beef for their burgers, because of the weak dollar they can use American beef for less then say Austrailian beef. This puts pressure on end cuts like chucks and round, that along with a short supply means higher prices. The major meat companies kinda have a monopoly when it come to setting prices. We've had to raise brisket prices three times this summer, and they are still selling like hotcakes.

OK We arent supposed to get political...so this isnt...hahahaha think about twenty years of nearly two billion a year so corn can be more expensive and so our food is....wow 20 billion to make our cost of living higher. OK I get the environmental deal...but we should be able to farm enough land to feed ourselves and the rest of the world who wants to buy our products

Read an article the other day,, Horrible drought in the SW..forcing beef producers to sell early cause they don't have enough to feed them..the earlier they sell the smaller the meat yield.. higher prices..
