Need some advice...oh boy, opened a can of worms with that one.

OK, I'll make it quick. In a bit of a dilemma here as my Daniel Boone GMG had a little fire this weekend. Long story short, due to the high heat we have been having (107 yesterday) I have found it tough to keep the smoker down at 150 for holding and keep the auger moving to prevent the very thing that happened. It idled at 150 for about two hours (do not know if auger was turning as I was prepping inside), I looked out and noticed white smoke, a little every now then is one thing but this was very pronounced and it was beginning to come from the hopper as well. So I immediately went out to check it and could we had a big problem. The fire had worked back into the auger then to the hopper. I immediately shut it off, unplugged it, and began scooping out pellets when a little flame shot up through the hopper. At this I point I just grabbed the hose and doused the inside of the hopper to get the flames down and extinguish it. After doing this cleaned out the hopper (the pellets at the bottom of the hopper were black), stripped out the guts to see what was happening in the firebox and clean it out. Basically the fire had somehow worked back into the auger. The combustion fan had no blades as it was melted away. After plugging back in and repeatedly going through the prime process to clean out the auger I discovered that about half the auger was full of pellets that had already cooked with the other and hopper right behind. I digress...so I ordered a new combustion fan today to see if the unit will still work successfully.

Now my dilemma. I have a BBQ catering biz that is starting to take off and have multiple parties booked from the 12th of July on, but a hesitance to drag this smoker out with due to this apparent design issue. I cannot afford to be down waiting on combustion fans or other parts and really don't want to purchase multiple quantities of parts just to have on hand in case this happens again(never happened in well over a thousand smoke sessions to date with a pellet smoker). Time is short for me and I am attempting to wade through the morass of info out to try and hit the mark on a smoker. So here is what I am attempting to fulfill in a smoker.

Pellet ( yes i do love to stick burn, but for catering pellet is money)
Budget is about $1500 max give or take. (looking at Yoder YS640)
Need it here by the 10th at the latest. (probably have to ship it as the only dealers I am finding in NorCal are GMG and Traeger.
Needs to be able to take a pounding. Have my doubts about GMG holding up for more than a year.
Capacity needs to be good as I typically cater to about 30 max now with the GMG DB at 480 Sq. In, but will upgrade to 640 no problem, then can tackle about 50 people.

I really like what I have seen in the Yoder especially with the upper rack, the extra capacity can take me to probably 70 or so people. Depending upon what I cook.

Finally, safety! While all smokers regardless of type have their flaws and can be dangerous I am very hesitant to spend good money on an auger system that can so easily work back to box.

I appreciate the feedback and realize the opinions will be diverse, but at the moment I am on short time and needing to make a buying decision ASAP.

Thanks for taking the time to read this quick ;) post.

The issue you had may have been because of outside temps. Our MAK super smoker box read 140 degrees yesterday just from sitting in the sun. Asking it to keep a temp of 150 would have been hard. I would guess if it was set at smoke which in the winter would stay about 160. In the heat of summer it is over 200. Don't know if any brand of peeler grill could have successfully held at 150.

One of my first thoughts

Yeah, I was thinking the high heat didn't do it any favors. But what I am wondering is if the pellet smokers that utilize an auger that directly deposits into the firepot is a cost cutting design issue. Further what concerned me is pulling the combustion fan off it was void of any blades(melted off) as it sits so close to the firepot; another possible design compromise? For me using a smoker with my grill for catering is a nice compliment when needed so I am trying to narrow my choices to units where the auger is not right in the pot. So far I have found Fast Eddy and some other higher priced units in the $3000 plus range, but not really much in the sub $2000 range. Yoder seemed to be an exception. At this point I was looking to see if anyone knew of other brands that may be out there but not yet marketed as the Traegers, GMG's, etc.

I have been happy with my 640. After an update or two and a switch to the dual fan setup, it is doing great. It holds temps very well and puts out great tasting food even with my minimal skills : )

Using the Yoder for catering might be an issue due to the weight. It is a beast and I would definitely look into the competition cart if you intend on moving it regularly.

Zinc, have you looked at the MAK 1 star? I'm sure BP can get it to you before the 10th. They're USA made in Dallas, OR. Not that far from you. Give BP a call. He'll do all he can to help you.

Take a look at the capacities for both...if similar the MAK 1 Star may be a better choice given it's much lighter weight and excellent controller...not to mention outstanding quality and customer service. Also we have cooked in 30 degree weather with driving winds and rain as well as 100 degree temps in Eastern WA and Las Vegas...no fire issues or problems with excessive heat. We have hauled our 2 Star in and out of our comp trailer for 8 competitions now with ZERO issues! Our 1 Star has been moved from our back deck to the comp trailer almost as many times with no issues as well...good luck!

the MAK has the best controller in the biz ITs designed from the ground up for the unit not made by a third party like the other brands

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. So far I have narrowed to a few, the Yoder 640, Blazn Gridiron, and possibly the MAK 1. However I did not see in any of the photos or vids I have found so far on the MAK 1 where you could increase capacity. That said one must go up to the MAK 2 to get in the ballpark for capacity. Which at that point puts spending well more for the MAK 2 than the other 2. Is there something I am missing when trying to determine the true capacity of the M1 and M2? Trying to get as close to an apples to apples comparison here. Thanks.
