I'm gcarrell and I am new to smoking. I purchased a YS640 about a month ago. I live in Wichita, KS. This is all new to me. I have never smoked before. I have read this forum on and off for the last month. My husband built a wood smoker 30 years ago and has smoked some awesome meats. I decided I wanted a smoker that you didn't have to babyset all the time like his wood unit. I am so excited to get cooking. I am a little lost because most forum is for the MAK.

So far I have only cooked hamburger and hotdogs. Today I decided to try to cook pork ribs and pork butt. Only time will tell how well my first smoke goes.

I would like any help for good rubs, marinade etc that you found the best.

Enjoy all your posts. A lot of great information.

Welcome. Andy (Hodedo) is a big yoder fan and is on this site quite regular. He could make tofu or grasshoppers taste good on a yoder.

Welcome to the family GCarrell. Don't worry, I don't have a MAK either. Virtually all of the information here translates just fine to most any pellet grill. My cooking has improved dramatically from reading forums like this one. Good luck, and have fun!!!

I don't know about grasshoppers - they are much better flash fried, but we can cook tofu for sure. :) BTW, starting to plan the next PNW trip... I'll let you know!!!

We teach monthly in Wichita, and do classes on all topics. Our Friday night course is all about the various ways you can cook on a pellet grill, and we have individual classes on different food styles, or meat types. Just finished the holiday series that was Ham/ Turkey and Lamb/Prime rib. I do have a 640 in the stable, so feel free to ask questions as well! And on PS.com, the search is your friend. There is a WEALTH of knowledge in the posts out here... so search on what you are looking for, and usually an answer will appear!

HoDeDo: Are the classes in Wichita through "All things BBQ"?

yes, they are!
Welcome gcarrell from a fellow YS640 owner in Wichita :) We've had ours a few months and have really enjoyed eating all the fabulous food that comes off of it! We're planning to take one of Andy's (HoDeDo) classes at ATBBQ, but so far our schedules haven't matched up where we could go.

Definitely check out BP's video's, I have learned a TON through his videos and this website.
