Hello to all. A pellet smoker wannabe from Mandan, North Dakota. I hav'nt bought a grill yet still doing research, there are so many to look at. So far i'm leaning towards a Green Mouintan, i guess its mainly the price it looks like they all cook awesome food. I come to this form and its members for help and suggestions as to what brand i should buy. I figure go to the place with experience. Any help would be great. Thanks again for letting me be here. Welcome 3fingers. I am fairly new here and to pellet grilling so maybe my opinion is not the best. Anyway, that disclaimer being said, I can totally sympathize with your dilemma. I started out looking at Traegers, checked out Green Mountain (actually found a couple of local Green Mountain vendors where I could kick the tires), and ended up buying a Memphis Pro. I do love my Memphis! No buyers remorse what so ever.. and I also love pellet cooking. It's easy, fun, and tasty. Careful where you buy your grill - some vendors are a lot more helpful than others.

I am biased. I love my Memphis. Had a Traeger before it. So I suggest a Memphis or a MAK if you can swing the price. GMG are solid grills and many people are happy with them.

Just do you research and find what grill best suits your needs. If you can get a look at one in person it helps. You will get many different opinions but in the end the final decision will be yours.

Welcome to the forum threefingers. Buying your first grill/smoker can be a daunting experience for sure. If at all possible spend more now to save you allot later. Kite gave you some very good advise concerning picking a good dealer. Good luck and good smoking.

Glad you joined us threefingers2, welcome!
We grew up in the same small 175 population town in North Dakota and you graduated 4 years ahead of me. I worked with/for your father for quite a few summers cleaning the school. Now we are running into each other 30some years later because of this great hobby of cooking and love for food.

One thing I can warn you about, you will never want to eat out again... everything taste so much better at home!

I guess if i were to order one it will be hard to tell if the dealer is ok or not. But i will keep on gathering info until my tastebuds can't stand it anymore and i have enough pennys saved up. So my search for info goes on. :)

Hi 3fingers. I was in the same boat as you a month ago. Test drove a Traeger, and went to one of those pool supplies/smoker dealers to look at the GMG. Its a nice grill but after following these guys and doing some research I pulled the trigger on a MAK. Stick with Big Poppa he has lots of nice grills to choose from and his staff is very helpful. Whatever you decide welcome to the fam.

Welcome from North Carolina. I bought my MAK 2 Star from Big Poppa several years ago. I would make the same choice today. This is a great place to "play".

Thanks guys for all the welcomes and advice. I looked at the MAK but i just don't have the cash to support such a purchase. I'm sure it's one heck of a grill.I'm just wondering what makes pellet grill/smokers so expensive. And why such a wide dollar variance. thanks again you guys for your time to respond. craig

Welcome! The price variance is just like anything... you get what you pay for! If your serious about purchasing one stay away from the lower end cheaper ones, you will only end up upgrading. Trust me.. I learned that lesson first hand.
