Hey all, I'm getting tired of freezer bags for leftovers...I have decided to purchase a vacuum sealer, any tips, tricks, or recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Rip,

The food saver series has outstanding products. We use a vertical home system that doesn't take up much space. Having it available and conveniently located will help you use it more. Costco also carries the bags (at least on the East Coast).

I have the Cabelas CG-15 commercial-grade sealer. It will handle bags up to 15" wide. It works really well. I bought it on sale, with free shipping (the only way to go). It is high quality, and I can use the FoodSaver bags, as well.

The Cabelas CG-15 is one of the best you can buy. Go to cabelas.com and check it out, you won't be sorry you did. They also have a roll of bags that is 11"x 50' you cut to size for only $19.95.

Does anyone know if the Weston Pro 2300 is completely identical to the Cabela CG15? The Weston is $50-$70 less online. I know Weaton makes the Cabela.

I believe the weston branded model is actually, slightly less versatile than the Cabelas Pro / Cabelas CG15. The cabelas model has more settings if I recall.

For the $400 that you spend on that, I'd go the extra cheese and get a Chamber vacuum sealer. You'll make your money back pretty quick on the bag savings alone. Chamber sealers don't need the expensive bags that are designed to suck the air out of. They also do not suck the liquids out of your bags. IF you have checked out the cabela's site, you see the sell the ARY Vacmaster 210 for $1100. It's little brother the VP112, is the hot ticket. I've gotten tired of waiting for a refurb 210 to come along, so I am getting the 112 this week :) Here is a little vid of it in action. ‪VacMaster VP112 intro & demo - Vacuum Packager / Vacuum Sealer‬‏ - YouTube

I own a Food Saver and although it works fine I have to freeze my meat prior to sealing uncooked meat as the vacuum will draw out the blood from the item and will not seal properly. I use it more for marinading meat which works great. I use a gallon pickle jar and place the vacuum seal lid on it and the marinade goes all the way through the meat.

I have a FoodSaver V3835 that I picked up for about $130 about 2 years ago. I've used it to seal up a half dozen deer that I've processed. I think I had one or two bag seal failures in that time otherwise it has worked very good. I've read that these units are basically throwaways - you can't purchase replacement parts so that may be an important consideration.

I've also picked up a marinate accessory and use it to prepare food and works nicely. I've found that the unit is a bit large to keep on the kitchen counter. I tend to box it up and put it away in between uses. I have no experience with any other vacuum sealer. I use it more regularly now that I smoke cheese!
