What kind of pellets should I start with?

So, when I finally pull the trigger in the next few days or weeks, what kind of pellets should I start with? I was thinking apple and hickory. Or maybe, I'll just start out with one kind. My GF calls me Redundant Rob, because I love to have a back up plan. So, I could see myself ordering at least two kinds of pellets.

What did you start with?

Apple, Hickory or a combo of the two are all good.

My first pellet order included a variety: 40 Lbs Oak (Oak is a standard for things such as steak, pizza, etc.), 40 lbs of Black Walnut, and a 40 lb. Big Poppa fruit flavor pack (Apple, Peach, Cherry & Pecan).

Black Walnut has found a place in my pellet inventory for sure! It's like hickory ramped up a few notches (both are nut trees). Not only is it great for beef, but it mixes well with oak to give a hickory like flavor and burns cleanly with high BTU's & very little ash. It also mixes well with apple to give that apple/hickory flavor I like so well.

Hickory is by far the most commonly liked flavor, Apple has a little more harsh smoke flavor for lack of better words so don't over smoke thin cuts with it (IMO).
Oak and alder are good all around as well.

I'd get a bag of each.

You're gonna need 'em!

IMHO:
Pork = Hickory or perfect mix

Beef = oak, mesquite for steaks

chicken = they are all pretty good to me.

Thanks, everyone.

Find apple smooth....but I use bbqers delight! I actually like all of them. Oak is our biggest seller.

I feel like this is the EBMM board where I get my guitars and strings from you. Now, it's going to be smoker and pellets from you. Wouldn't dream of doing it any other way. So, BBQer's Delight, it is!

I started with the Traeger pellets. Once I tried BBQ Delight I didn't go back. Much better pellets. I like Hickory for most everything.
