Yoder YS640 -- 2nd rack or no 2nd rack?

I'm awaiting my Yoder YS640 (scheduled it for delivery a month out), and I'm debating whether I should get the 2nd rack. They warned me that if I don't get the 2nd rack, I'll have to weld mounts (I believe) for the rack at a later time.

Anyone here with the YS640 have any thoughts about this addition? Judging by pics, the 640 is pretty dang big, so I initially elected not to get it. Just thought I'd get some owners' opinions.

When I had the Yoder I did indeed have the second rack.I would put several racks of ribs on the bottom and things like ATB's on the the top.I would go for it.

Get the shelf. It is removable so if you don't want to use it for a cook just take it out. But I think you will highly regret it if you don't get. I can put 6 butts on that cooker easily with that shelf in there.

An upper rack is always a great idea, and not just because you can add more food.

Forget about adding more cooking surface for a moment. There's an even more important reason, and that's Flexibility! Just like an oven, multiple racks/levels gives you more options as to where to place food.

Here are just a few examples:

- You can cook a roast on the top rack with a pan of veggies underneath to catch the juices.
- The top of a shepherd's pie, Mac & Cheese, etc. will brown better if it's on a top rack.
- If you decide to try hot-smoking sausage, bacon, etc. then a top rack gets it further away from the direct heat underneath.

Get that upper rack. It's an investment in better cooking!



P.S. I would be lost without the upper racks in any of my grills.

I am an owner of 640 and the 2nd rack is a big plus. It is worth the extra money.

2nd rack all the way. It was alluded to above -- but the flexibility for your cooking is reason enough. And when you get that time where you needed the capacity for the extra food, you'll love having done it.

And yes, the factory unit, is welded rails, and tube framed rack that is nice and stout. So if you dont order the 2nd rack, it is a little work to get it added later.
