Hey Lamar, welcome to the forum! Chicken + comps = 1star. The BigPoppaSmokers team just got 4th in chicken at the America Royal cooking on a 1star. The 1Star has the same firepot as the 2Star, but a smaller cooking chamber=more smoke.

Hi Lamar. Welcome to the forum.

I think you'll be happy with either MAK grill. It boils down to budget versus features. Either way you're getting a grill you will love to use and great support from both Big Poppa Smokers and the MAK team.

The 1 Star also has a smaller footprint and would be MUCH easier to transport.. I flop mine down in the back of my Ford Ranger to haul around.

Hey Rip, thanks for the advice. I really like the 1star anyway, I should have it by the end of the week. Can't Wait!!!!!

Don't count out the 2 Star for comps! The 2010 CBBQA Team Of The Year in chicken category uses a 2 Star to do all their chicken. Also, the 2010 CBBQA Rookie Team of the Year has switched to using a 2 Star for their chicken.

Welcome to PelletSmoking!

Welcome to the forum. You are more than half way to your decision just by deciding on MAK...the rest is all good.

I cooked alll my big meats on the upper racks in Mesquite. I like ribs and chicken to have that radiant heat from the deflector plate, but I normally cook my big meats in a vertical (FEC100).... so I put them on the top rack. Works great!!

As far as 1 Star vs. 2 Star... BP has said numerous times that he thought the 1Star smoked more than the 2Star; so I had to test the theory. He was nice enough to bring us pits to use (including the one off his patio) so I had both 1 and 2Star MAKs in our site. We turned in the brisket off the 1 Star... Better color and flavor. And they cooked with the exact same temps/times, next to each other... so it was about as controlled an environment as you can get. The 1Star produced the best "smoke" profile. and it had great color! The 2Star put out a brisket that I would be happy to turn in also... but 1Star brisket went to the judges.
