Best book for a rookie

So very very new to this smoking thing. Grampa made some amazing stuff but never got the chance to learn anything from him. After looking through this weeks contest I want food like this. I know it will take some time and a few lessons learned before I get there, but I am willing to take my lumps.

Is there a good book to get me going? Would love a few recipes as I am getting lost, maybe too much surfing looking at BBQ and not enough cooking. Need to learn the basic stuff so I can start making up my own creations.

Thx.
Portland Oregon area.

Pretty much everything you need is right here on the PelletSmoking forums; but if you are looking for a good cookbook on smoking and BBQ, here is one my wife and I have that I would suggest...

Loaded with recipes, hints, tips, procedures and with no pictures to take up room on the 482 pages, just good information for anyone... novice to experienced.

I am a avid collector of BBQ cook books
Ray Lampe, Dr BBQ has done some fine books
The books mentioned above are some of my favorites
If we could get Trigg to sit still long enough with a editor
that would also be a good un

You gotta cook. Wicked Good and Mixons books are great and full of great comp style examples as well as some fun recipies. You need to know your grill, and adapt recipes to your cooker. Start out with something simple and cheap like chicken, and get some rubs and sauces from BP. And have some fun.

I like Chris Lilly's book a lot along with Paul Kirk's books (the big one and the rub/sauce book). Hey BP...I bet you had a blast tho...Would've love to have been a fly on the wall to watch and learn stuff. They had Mr. Trigg on quite often and no way is he younger than you.

I found a book at Costco called Fire It Up. Sadly I can't give you the author because i lent it to a friend and I have not seen it in almost a year. The only thing about the recipeies in that book is that they require a bit of modifying (as most do) because they are all very salty.

season two and they kept me offscreeen most of the time because I was too old.

yeah, yeah... They just didn't want their servers flooded from all the ladies e-mailing, you ol' chick magnet! Just ask Sparky if I'm right!

I finally got to see that episode on Netflix about an hour or so ago!

I just started watching BBQ Pitmasters.. not sure I like Mixon.

Well I enjoyed watching him today... on my comfy couch with the double dose of Percocet the doctor put me on this morning!

Thanks for the help. Just so much good looking food and not sure where to start. Would you recommend sticking with one food/cut and getting good at it or switching things around?

I rather enjoyed his (Mixon) book. Good photos, many by Myron himself. Good recipes and good history and an enjoyable book. Specific technical details are lacking, but advice and tips abound. Given his winning history, I think heeding the advice and reading through is certainly worthwhile. I get hungry just flipping the pages!

As I am a NooB, I can't say this is a beginners primer. However, I will say that it is inspirational and has plenty of information, advice, and recipes inside to keep you at task, which is rare in most cookbooks.. I say buy it, it's cheap after all, and see for yourself.

For just getting to know a smoker and getting the feel for it I would start with a pork butt for pulled pork, fatty or a chicken... These are great choices to get use to your smoker and for you to introduce yourself to smoking as the fat content allows for temps swings to a point and gives you a gratifying product in the end.
