I think I have it narrowed down to these two models but would like to hear what experienced pellet smokers have to say about them. Please give your honest opionion on both grills as I have no idea which way to go. I like that the advantage temp goes higher...but does it really? other than that I don't see much of a difference between the two. thanks

I have an Advantage and it goes to 600° without batting an eye. Unless you're at the higher temps you'll have a tougher time searing.

i can sear using my maks at 400 using searing grate or grill grates. you don't need high heat to sear.

are there any other differences between the 2 or does it come down to brand preference? I have no brand preference so...

600° on the Memphis is great if you do a lot of actual grilling. And the Memphis is a little more insulated.

What made the difference for us were the available features. I absolutely love the MAK Griddle. That one option alone greatly increases your flexibility in what & how you can cook on the MAK.

In addition what Sparky said, the griddle and 400° is also great for searing!

The MAK 2 Star also has the Cold-Smoke chamber, direct "FlameZone" grilling and a quick pellet change feature.

Other options include: Searing Grate, Remote Boss, Half or full upper racks.

I think the MAK is a better smoker and a more versatile cooker all around. The pellet boss controller is phenomenal and with options like the sear grate and griddle you really have a lot of cool cooking options. While there are grills that get hotter, a MAK running on high with the flame zone does a very nice job of grilling.

If you told me that I was only allowed to have one cooker on my patio it would be a MAK 2.

Come on guys! I know you all have opinions on both grills. Sell me on one.

1st off you have to figure what you want to do w/ a pellet grill. how many ppl you cooking for? a large one or a smaller one. how much money do you want to spend? a pellet grill and a lump grill will cook just about anything. do your research buddy. your figure it out. we can't tell ya what to buy. we like what we like because of history w/ our grills. i myself have owned 4 different pellet grills by all different companies. not to smart. i should have just paid for the right one to begin w/. its my wifes fault because she wasn't supervising. ya got to have a feel for the grill your going to buy. try and see some of the grills in person. to put your hands on them is way better.

Sparky had given you the best advise you can get. What's best for you may be very different for others and vise versa. You must do the homework for what's going to work the best for you and your family. After making the decision, it's all on you. Good luck and good smoking.

Have never cooked on a MAK, but can tell you that my Memphis Elite is extremely easy to use and clean, gets to 900 degrees with the direct insert, and is extremely well-built and insulated. Can cook cakes, pies, bread, whatever. Only feature I wish it had (from what I know of the MAK) is quick change on the pellets.
