I want to be able to grill steaks and smoke ribs and pork butts.I have been leaning towards a Memphis . I am just getting into the world of smoking ,i love to grill so i was really looking for a unit that could do both well.I like to spend my money the right way the first time, so spending some more up front to be happier in the long run works for me.

Smart man. Buy quality the first time. I love my Mak. Zero regrets. Memphis does get hotter. For grilling I bought a Weber Performer charcoal. Best of both worlds.

Good luck!

Glad you joined us Todd, welcome!
Best advice is research, compare and talk to owners of all brands.
I'm a anomaly on this forum being a completely satisfied and happy Yoder owner, but I think truth be told if you purchase Memphis, MAK or Yoder you are getting one of the best pellet grills currently manufactured. I think each have selling points over the other, just have to figure out which fits your needs and budget best.

Welcome to PS.com!

Curious to know after all you've been reading, what is your opinion and which cooker are you leaning towards?

I am leaning towards a Memphis advantage from reviews i have read and there construction and temp range.I would like a Elite but not sure if i want to spend that much money.

If getting to 600F is important to you then I think you will be happy with your Memphis. The low ceiling of the Memphis has always put me off though. Just realize that 600F will throw a beating on your powder coat and cause discoloration (graying). It's why I choose to use a Weber kettle and lump charcoal to get my searing done. Well, I used to use a kettle, now I use a BPS Engineered Drum smoker for high temp sears.
I can't tell you enough of how perfect a cooking team a drum and a MAK 2 Star make.
Whether or not you decide on the Memphis or the MAK, look to Big Poppa Smokers to take care of you. You will not regret it!

all the memphis are stainless the advantage is a fine cooker but if you can sweing it the pro is really good...only drawback is not as much smoka t lower temps and the capacity due to what scooter said about the low slung lid

If you are expecting to buy something that does everything well, you will be disappointed.

You either specialize in one, or just a few things and do them well, or you have to compromise to attempt to do everything as well as you can.

I have the MAK2 for smoking, and the Weber Summit S670 for grilling. Two different animals intended to do two different things.
