Just joined and thank you for your help!! I am getting ready to order a Mak 2 Star. I was hoping you all would be able to tell me what options are a must and honestly a waste (or not needed)? Thank you and as always best wishes, Charlie :)

Welcome Charlie! If you do a search of this forum there should be recommendations for accessories. The question has been asked before. Or,(better yet) give Big Poppa a call. They'll discuss with you the type of cooking you do and will then advise you on accessories.

Welcome Charlie. Charlie a must have for your new MAK is the cover. Take care of your MAK and it will take care of you. I would also buy the split top greats. I personally love the added front shelf, I don't know if that's an add-on or comes with the 2 star now. There are many great toys you can add to the MAK, take your time, cook on her for awhile, get a feel for what's important to you and what's not. Here's wishing you the best of luck and good smoking.

To me the must-have accessories are:

1) Either a single full upper rack, or better yet two upper half racks (the latter costs a few more $$, but gives you a lot more flexibility.

2) The MAK Griddle. Man can you do a lot of different things with that griddle. Typical griddle stuff like pancakes, grilled cheese, etc. You can make sauces, in it. We make hot dog chili quite often in ours. You can shallow fry stuff (keep the heat lower; around 300°-350°). The griddle is very versatile.

As SoCalSmoker and TentHuter recommended I would also go with the split upper shelf . This is not a MAK accessory but I'd also go with a remote thermometer something similar to the Maverick et-732 and an instant read thermometer similar to the thermapen

Enjoy the MAC and looking forward to your postings

MAK 2 Star optional equipment

Hi Charlie,

Welcome to a great forum, you'll learn a lot from these experts. Just received my 2 Star last week, I ordered almost all the extras, remote,griddle,searing grate, etc.
But the most useful and important to me, a beginner was the front shelf, and the extra 1/2 upper rack(I got 2) for maximum space. Good luck you'll have tons of fun.

Among the many great things about MAK is that they cook too....they develop accessories to really enhance the cooking esperience and to add versatility. Many think of accessories as add on sales builders....The split are fabulous....I use all of them...so basically decide what you want to cook the most and go for it.....the other thing to consider is that Big Poppa Smokers isnt going anywhere so start with the basics and reward yourself as you go!

I have the following accessories for my 2 star and I consider all of them indispensable:

* Cover (get some heavy duty clips to clip the bottom so it won't blow off on windy days)
* 2 half upper shelves (I almost always use both for a full 2nd shelf but once in a while being able to run a half shelf for ABTs is handy)
* Searing grate (only if you grill, this or grill grates, both are good options)
* Smoking insert (makes cleanup when smoking greasy foods way easier)
* Frog mats (amazing for smoking small things like ABTs/moinks)
* 2nd meat probe
* Hook (this along with a velcro wrap holds the cord when not in use; one of these should come standard with the grills for this purpose IMO)
* thermopen (instant read thermometer that doubles as a probe for testing doneness)

Accessories I don't have that I'm eyeing:

* 2nd frogmat, planning on cutting it in half to be able to frogmat half a shelf
* griddle
* 2nd thermopen, my wife keeps stealing mine!

Thank you for taking the time to try and help me! What is a smoking insert? I don't see this as an option or a couple of the other ones that you make mention? Example: frog mats, hook? Thank you again, Charlie

What is a smoking insert?

https://www.bigpoppasmokers.com/store/bbq-accessories/mak-2-star-grease-pan

It's a blank grease pan (basically a big sheet of metal). The stock grease pan has holes in it for grilling and covers to fit over them when you want to smoke. I find the covers a bit fiddly and grease can sometimes get under them if you foil the grease pan (for easier cleaning). I smoke a lot and find it a lot easier to just put the blank grease pan in when smoking and the stock pan in when grilling.

How did I not know that existed?! I hate cleaning those bumps around the holes on the flame zone after a smoke.
