Two newbie questions Make 2

I'm a new owner of a MAK 2 and want to know which end of the Flame Zone faces the smoke box? I noticed two different sized openings at the ends of the Flame Zone, but I can't find anything in the directions about the right way to orient it. My second question: when searing, can you just uncover one side of the Flame Zone and use the searing grill over it or must you remove both covers? I'm cooking just two steaks that will easily fit on the searing grate. Thanks for all of the great info on this amazing grill!

The Flame zone slopes down toward the smoker box, and yes you can remove one cover to use the searing grate. I do it frequently when I have multiple items on the grill at the same time that have different cooking regimens.

Thank you for the quick answers. The Flame Zone slopes to the right either way, but I'm wondering if it makes a difference end for end since the smoke opening is larger on one end than the other. I assumed the larger opening should align with the smoke box on the right, but don't know if that is correct or if it makes any difference either way.

Hi Crocboy! The FlameZone pan has an "F" embossed on it. The "F" should be facing front. You can also tell that the pan is properly position with the small square opening is on the left.

And yes, you can remove one or both FZ covers when grilling, depending on how much meat you are cooking. For example, last Sunday night, I wanted to cook 3 pork chops, so I just removed the FRONT FZ cover and left the back one in place. Thanks again for buying an American-made MAK Grill!

Thank you! I didn't see the F, but I put in right anyway with the small opening to the left. I love this grill and the quality of materials, design, workmanship and functionality are outstanding. I'm switching from a Big Green Egg and the ease of cooking on my MAK almost makes me feel guilty! Almost!

Sorry Crocboy, I forgot to tell you about the "F" and the small opening, etc. You're good to go. I went to Mexico for a week and caught a fish that's supposed to be excellent on the grill(MAK). Waiting for a field guide of Mexico and Sea of Cortez fish so I can figure out what it is in English. After that it's Mak 2-star smoked turkey for Thanksgiving. If you haven't done that yet, you need to do it STAT! Previously the turkey has been parked in my BPS drum smoker, which will now have other items in it this T'day. We also do a smaller turkey in the conventional oven just so the house gets permeated with the smell of roast turkey, but nobody touches that one. Everyone wants the smoked turkey. In our sneakiness, the little one is for our sammiches etc., because there's nothing left of the smoked one.

The "F" is embossed on the TOP of the pan, near the edge. It is a little difficult to see, but it's there.
