BBQ Trivia Question

While checking out various places to have a "BBQ Crawl" in Lexington, NC, I found a sandwich that I had never heard of before. It is called a "SKIN SANDWICH". First of all, has anyone heard of this before? Secondly, do you have a guess as to what it might be?

It’s not what I was thinking when I saw it, but I know I would like to try it.

I also "googled" it, and it is not related to chicken. That is what I thought it might be at first. Hint: It is pork related.

Hmm, I used to live & work just northeast of Lexington in the Greensboro area. Without looking it up, and thinking back to those days of good NC BBQ, my guess is it's crispy smoked pork skins taken from cooking up whole hogs. Am I close?

Chili - there is a blog post out there with a potato skin sandwich, that's what I found but sounds like Art has found something else

I read where KFC is testing a new skin sandwich.. its called SkinWich has 5 layers of fried chicken skin, lumped on a bun and topped with white american cheese and bacon.

Speaking of pork rinds as a child we used to kill hogs it was always a fun day or at least I thought it was , but no so sure it really was now.
Grandma couldn't wait to render which would produce the lard..... talk about lowering your Cholesterol well don't use it !!! but the best part to me about the lard making was at the end of it all you got cracklings.. yum yum and they wasn't good fer ya either ! :)

Cliff,
You are all over it like a cheap suit! They take the skin off a cooked pork shoulder, cut it into sandwich size pieces and deep fry it. Served as a sandwich. The smokey flavor of the hickory they use to pit cook their pork really brings out the overall goodness. We had some during our 1st Crawl, but served as snacks. According to the lady at Cook's Barbecue in Lexington, they do this on Thursday each week and it is so popular that it runs out early. This must be a NC thing, I guess.

Sparky,
I think you would like this, too. I don't need the bread, but I could and would eat the rest of the Skin Sandwich.

Booyah - I guessed right for a change! lol

I knew that while I lived there many folks smoked shoulders with the skin on and would later take the skin and munch on it or even chop it up into the pork, so that guess just made sense.

I worked with a guy in NC that used to say, "You can eat everything on a pig but the Oink"!
