I just purchased this beauty and would like your opinions which pellets you prefer and which ones to stay away from. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
I stay far away from Traeger pellets. They are too secretive in what's in the bag you purchase. You don't know if it's oak or alder based and they use flavored oils to get the various pellet flavors. And when you ask them, they're not honest about it.
My preference is for the BBQ'ers Delight pellets for a few reasons.
1) They are a high quality pellet. They are consistent; I know exactly what I'm getting.
2) They're Oak based (2/3) blended with the flavor wood (1/3). This mimics the flavor I get when I cook with stick burners: oak based charcoal supplemented with chunks of flavorwood.
3) Oak has a higher BTU rating than alder based pellets. So, while there may be cheaper, alder based pellets out there, I would be going through more of them. More pellets = more shipping costs, so it compounds.
4) Shipping is included with the BBQ'ers Delight (from BigPoppaSmokers.com), and they are delivered to my door. That means I don't have to drive 20- 25 minutes each way nor spend a single penny in gasoline to go and purchase pellets. With today's gas prices that is a huge savings. So the final cost ends up being very competitive with other brands.
