Big Poppa Smokers American Royal Results

OK...What a blast.

We had a disappointing sort of average cook. I have never been to an awards ceremony...never go. Johnny Trigg came in the Global Corporate Headquarters and said "You are coming with me!" When Johnny Trigg says that you go.

Dont get me wrong our food was good...but we were hoping to cook over our heads. We get a 4th in Chicken....Andy and all are cheering....then comes ribs....11th...Andy and Johnny say "You are now leading the American Royal" Then no calls in Pork or Brisket....we ended up 33rd out of 142 of the best in the world...so we are very very happy

We are now putting the meat on for the 500+ team open.....

Best contest in the world!

Get a call against the caliber of teams at the Royal your first time is great. The you get two and finish overall in the top 25% is pretty darn good. Good Luck with the judges tomorrow. Don't need it cooking we know the team can do that.

yeah the key is the 142 are all big champions...You can analyze the scoring sheets...you cant afford 2 judges to not like you...it is also so subjective...two calls at your first Royal is really a great result

OK the open is something you cannot believe...500 teams.....Yesterday we felt that we just cooked average...Today we felt like we brought our A game.....We nailed the chicken, ribs and did much better in port and brisket....Kiss of death. Nobody ever likes getting slammed but we got slammed pretty bad on our ribs today....we hit the wrong table...sounds like sour grapes but I will tell you Johnny Trigg came over with a plate of his ribs right after turn in and we gave him one of ours and he said that he is going for second. He couldnt believe the scores but was quick to say "welcome the the royal" I was pretty dissapointed with a 155 in ribs which pushed us down to 150th. They were nearly 20 points lower than the day before and I cant remember the last time we got a 155 in ribs. You always look and great teams do well...some unheard of make a strong showing and some really good teams are back of the pack.

Im not whining...we got two calls at the invitational and had a fabulous time...just trying to give some of you a little insiders perspective

Glad you had the Invitational results to enjoy before getting the Royal Open scores
Happens every year too many teams not enough experienced judges

Hey Thom thanks but like I said everybody thinks their food is good....we usually take out results as constructive...this one was just bizarre but everybody warned me.....no sour grapes it was a fabulous experience and we are happy proud and all that stuff to hear our names called at the American Royal in our second season cooking.....Im super happy that we have already qualified for next years.....The only bad part about all this is that when you have a disappointing result you want to get right back out there and cook and because of the whole Arizona/Kcbs fiasco most of our remaining comps are cancelled....we are going to Antioch in 5 weeks and then to the two dayer in Vista but Jody wont be there

Sterling.... Did you happen to see the skunk that went through my camp? Yes, "welcome to the royal" is right. We had scores both higher and lower than we expected... BUT definately fun, nonetheless.

The one thing I loved is that folks using our products did well, lots of top finishes.... so that was a new level of excitement for us. also had some students from our classes do well - One of our NY teams, took 12th overall in the open! It is so cool to see that happen, and then talk with them after it does. Our next one is the Jack! Lynchburg bound, so I hope I can end the season on a high note :)

"because of the whole Arizona/Kcbs fiasco most of our remaining comps are cancelled."

I am not sure what you are referring to there Sterling

Yes Andy having the Jack to look forward to sure takes the stink outa the Royal Open Skunk ;0)
