Coffee

there has been some talk of coffee lately - the post on whether you can roast it on a pellet grill, Andy & Kim ordering an expresso machine, Sparky being in the coffee business, Susan & I both preparing coffee with a funnel during the power outage...... I having been thinking about coffee lately because I have been drinking the same kind for awhile and am thinking I need a change but I have also been thinking about the fact that I don't really know much about coffee............

So I'm curious...... type of coffee, how do you brew it, how do you prepare it (black, cream, milk, sugar, honey, etc)

I have a Keurig (it's my third, I had a very low serial number on the first non-business model made). I have been drinking Green Mountain Dark Magic for years - both the regular and decaf. I drink it black but for iced coffee I will add nonfat milk.

I have been drinking some form of espresso with steamed milk since before Starbucks was shaving...went through the pretty cool italian machines...then my friend sent me a gift. A nespresso coffee system. Purists may bristle..I dont care...I now have 5 of those machines. The coffee they offer I believe to be really good....and different strengths. You have to buy the pods from them and they are pricey .65 a pod, and the customer service is out of this world...but sorry spark...its cheaper than going to a coffee shop.

I'm an espresso fan myself. My parents got me a espresso machine as a wedding present. Haven't made a cup of drip since then. The Nepresso is an awesome machine. I've had a keurig in the past, but didn't like that you couldn't adjust the coffee strength.

My father-in-law got into coffee roasting after retiring. He's given me beans to taste from every part of the world. I've learned terms such as Peabody, Full City Roast and second crack. It's an amazingly interesting industry, kind of like pellet grills and meat smoking!

those pods are not much more than the k-cups for the keurig - I'm paying .58 cents per k-cup, so it's just the up-front machine cost thats really the difference . I have been looking at the nespresso off & on for a few years.

I have a french press, A keurig (on our 2nd, and it just died)... and a Krups, with a thermal carafe... always trying to get something that uses the right temps, brew times ,etc.

There are lots of grinders, a conical burr is what I think most feel are the ones most have settled on as the better choice...

Deb, I was looking pretty hard at the Lattissima machine.... after having a latte out of BP's. Then the Lattissima + came out, and it was a no brainer. I believe that is what BPS has in the Global World Headquarters, and it's now on my counter :)

It produces a great crema, and if you go to the milk frothing side of the house... it produces an excellent froth. GREAT machine. I would definately say go for it.

One of the many cool things Sterling has introduced me to :). The 3 Pure Expresso pods are .64 a piece, the rest of the blends, and lungos are .57 a piece... so not far off from the Keurig pricing.

Only downside so far is that I used my "my K-cup" to brew coffees I liked that werent in the pods. I see there is a company producing a fill your own pod for this machine also... but have not looked into it yet. The "My KCup" was a Keurig branded part.... the brew you own pod for these is aftermarket... so not sure about it yet. I do know that Nespresso makes a big deal about their "Grand Crus" and the process for packaging them... We like most of them, but had a few stand out favorites.

I get my coffee from a local roaster. I like their moka-java 50/50 (half decaffeinated) blend, which they do at a medium roast. I also like the varietals they have, especially the less roasty things they do with smoother Ethiopian and Sumatran beans. I use fine-ground for a drip maker weekends at home, drank with a dollop of half and half; coarse-ground for a french press at work, black.

We used to get whole bean and grind our own but now find it's easy enough to have the roaster do it to order.

My buddy told me about the moca java you mentioned. He's really liking it alot and he uses a French press as well. I'll have to get over there and try some myself.

Me.. I'm using a cuisinart drip model with whole bean DD
I grind myself daily. As much as I love coffee I really should educate myself about it more.

Great thread, Deb. I like a dark roast coffee with honey and half and half, although I'm slowly weaning off of both. Since the power outage I've been looking at getting a French press. I don't do flavored coffees and love iced coffee in the summer.
Oh. And Sparky, if I ever get to the Left Coast, I'm coming for coffee and ribs. Just sayin'....

Good discussion. Coffee is an important part of food, so no wonder this group gives it lots of thought.

A few years ago I got Jura Capresso Z5 super-automatic machine when I retired. It makes a perfect cup of cappuccino with the push of one button. It starts by grinding the beans and then froths the milk into the cup then brews the coffee. No hands required. It is part of our morning routine and sometime afternoons in chilly weather. We try different beans - some local - but our "house" coffee is Kirkland (Costco) espresso blend roasted by Starbucks.

When we are camping we use a french press.

Instant on work day and french press on the weekend I love all coffee.
My pop was a work a day guy and made instant coffee every morning and still does today so that was what I grew up with.
Coffee in the morning and tea with supper everyday

Hey I'm glad to see this conversation too. I haven't smoked any raw beans yet, but I plan on it soon.

For the record, I put myself through college fishing on boats in Alaska. This is where I learned to drink coffee. Pour the grounds in boiling water, skim em off, then drink it. And we liked it! Heck, we even drank Sanka.

Now, however, it's all about the beans. Where they're from and how they are roasted make all the difference (not unlike a good cut of beef). Right now I'm drinking this Peruvian coffee grown at around 5000 ft above sea level. It's absolutely wonderful. I put my espresso machine away years ago and pretty much use a french press. I also have this double boiler gravity pot (don't remember what it's actually called) not unlike what my grandparents had. That makes one heck of a pot of coffee.

So now you've got me thinking again. Maybe today I'll go find some raw beans and throw them in the smoker for a few hours. Then into the hot air (popcorn) popper for a quick roast, grind em, and into the french press.

But first, I have to smoke some salmon.

They quit selling it before I could order; but I did see it on their club site when I first looked at machines. I think that forming those sustainable growth partnerships is ideal!
The Rosabaya de Columbia was our favorite "pure expresso"; Of the blends, we like the Ristretto, Roma, and Arpeggio, then ordered a couple of the decafs: Decaffeinato Intenso and Lungo.
