Cook times for a butt and a brisket

I am planning to throw an 8 lb. pork butt and a brisket on my new Traeger tomorrow. How long should I plan on the two meats taking to cook at the same time? I've read ranges of anywhere from 10 to 20 hours.

First competition and I'm getting a bit nervous about when to put everything on.

Thanks for helping a rookie out!

Depends on temp your going to cook at and are you going to wrap at the stall. Need more info. To be honest with you the butt will be much more forgiving than that brisket. If I had a new cooker I think I would learn how it cooks before I went after a brisket.

Will this brisket be trimmed, flat or what? Need more information. How big of a butt? On an eight pound butt I'd smoke at 220* for at least 12 hours wrapping after 8 hours. I usually add a little sauce prior to wrapping.

I am planning to cook at 225-250 and usually wrap towards the end

No sense wrapping at the end. Wrap at the stall usually around 160. Once you see the temp start rising more quickly unwrap at 185-190 and get your bark back. Pull at 195-200.

Thanks for the help guys. I haven't picked up the brisket yet so I don't the exact size but I was planning on getting a flat. I've read I could throw both on around 7:00pm and pull them off around 5:00am (assuming they hit the right internal temp) and they will be fine in the cooler until turn-in times around 12:30

CGraham, check the hall of fame recipes forum stickies. Two resident forum champion competition pitmasters give up some of their techniques on cooking briskets. It can apply to both brisket and pork. Very insightful and an excellent place for a newbie to start.
