Seriously, I ran my MAK all last winter (and it was a nasty one here) without any problems. What kind of pellets were you burning?
A while back I posted a question about choosing a MAK or a Memphis smoker. I got a lot of useful responses, but no one mentioned the fact that the Memphis is insulated.

This is my present winter set up (last years photo, obviously)
I do not use blankets or bricks. I feel that the wind is the big killer and this simple set up under my patio does the job just fine. I may add some small sides - 4' or so later this month.
