GMG or Yoder?

This sort of sounds like "should I buy a Chevy or a Caddy". They will both do the job but one is more expensive than the other and has more bells and whistles. But, can they both do the job for which they are intended, and how much is the prestige factor worth. In this case, they both will require that you get familiar with whichever you buy, and I am sure you will be satisfied with either.

Actually, I think it is more than "bells and whistles". How long will it last, how much trouble/frustration are you going to have with it, how much enjoyment and/or frustration will you have when you are using it..

I too struggled with the decision regarding the GMG. I finally went with the GMG because I wanted to start out with what was in my budget ( and a little help from the dealer). Now, if and when the time comes and I am sure the time will come I will look at the major upgrade and go from there. I can tell ya that no matter which one you get your useage time will greatly increase once you get the hang of it.

I can't comment on which is better because I have used neither. I can however confirm what others have said in that once you get a pellet and start cooking, it becomes an addiction. I am constantly trying to figure out what to try and cook next. It's a wonderful, fun hobby in my opinion. And this from a guy who owns now two Traegers. I love it

I think I am going to go with the GMG. All the things I didn't like about my Traeger should not be issues with the GMG. Maybe next year I can add a Yoder to my stable! Thank you everyon
e for your input.

I'm very happy with my GMG! I was considering these usual suspects as well - Mak, Yoder, Memphis - but for me it came down to budget, I just couldn't afford the pricier ones. So far my Daniel Boone has lived up to my expectations!

Be wary of yoder

I would be very wary of yoder. They look nice and feel solid, but the temperature regulation is flawed. Mine shuts down for no reason then overheats. It has ruined about $500 of meat so farr, and I am about ready to push it off a cliff.

Going for GMG Daniel Boone

Thanks for this thread. Newby here ;)
Tomorrow I will be picking up my very first pellet smoker - GMG's Daniel Boone . After years of using Webers Bullet thing I am tired of trying to master it and having to control and deal with temperature all day long.
Found the Daniel Boone model for $599 AND minus $50 rebate ! I think that makes it a good deal and I can't justify paying double that for something that might be just a tad better, I am sure this things will last until the point I want to get a new one.
Wish me luck people.

I went through the same anguish when I was shopping around for my first pellet smoker a few months ago. I ended up going with the GMG Daniel Boone because of price, and because I valued my life. My wife would have killed me had I spent the money on the grill I wanted (MAK). I have been pretty happy with my purchase so far. I cook something on it almost every weekend. I usually have a tri-tip or two on there. I have also done a beer can chicken, some drumsticks, stuffed jalapenos, bacon cheeseburger meatloaf, and some ribs. I tend to use my wireless temp probe before using the built in one, because I find the built in one to be inaccurate by about 12-15 degrees. That was easy to get used to, and has not been a problem since using the wireless. The family is LOVING the food that is coming off of the smoker, so I imagine we will upgrade when this one has served its purpose.

BTW, I can also attest to this becoming an addiction! I m constantly looking for the next fun thing to try, and constantly tweaking rubs and injections. So much fun!

I know you will enjoy your new toy!

KS, this is the dilemma many have gone through, it's been replayed by many here and on other forums as well. If you try to save money, you usually get what you paid for. A few years down the road you end up buying again thus the total cash outlay is MORE. The saying does have validity, 'buy once, cry once'. Between just these two choices? ...go see the Yoder, then buy it! JMTC :)

I find myself in the same dilemma. I really want a MAK 2 Star because it's American made & seems to have the best controller in the market. Yet, it's out of my price range. I was seriously thinking of the GMG because of price point but I wonder about quality. The Yoder was my next choice because it seems well built and has a 10 year warranty. However, it seems they have the least advanced controller out of my 3 choices. I can't believe that they don't have any meat probe monitors built into their controller. With 2 kids getting ready to enter college, it seems I may be sticking with what I have until I can save up for a MAK 2 Star. I've been envying everyone on here with a pellet grill so I guess I will keep trolling and learning with everyone on here until I can save up the $$ for what I want. I love this site, and all of the information I have learned about cooking on it!!
