Guess they all can't be winners

So far pretty much everything that I have attempted has turned out pretty good. Wife didn't like the scalloped potatoes I did last weekend. Were a little under done but she didn't care for the smoke flavor. Today I decided I would try one of the amazing looking dishes I saw from one of the take BP money contests on here. Pulled out some beef from the freezer. Been in there for a little while but looked good. Went to grab some rubs and the balsamic glaze I just got from BP (brand new) took a nose dive and the neck of the bottle separated from its body and I had glaze everywhere. Managed to save about ½ the bottle and is in a Tupperware now. Started the Mak 1 up and everything was going good. Took a peek at the pellet level and it looked good. Tossed the meat on and got the veggies ready. Meat got close so I tossed on the veggies and pulled the meat to rest. Notices the hopper was out. Didn't expect it to be out already. Had the Mak up to 400 and most cooks I have done are much lower and the pellet usage was a lot less. Tossed some more pellets in but guess he fire was out and the temp kept dropping (but pellets kept feeding into the fire pot). Shut off the mak and started it back up again to ignite. Then the fire started and talk about smoke. Pulled the veggies and finished on the gasser. Plated the meal and visually it looked good. Wife didn't like anything. Meat had an off flavor (guessing old meat). Short of the off taste it was perfectly cooked from looks and visually. What a bummer. Veggies had a burnt smoke flavor. Not the nice clean smoke I was used to seeing. Think the fire pot was too full and when the pellets caught on fire oh watch out. Not a very good meal :( But learned a lot. Keep a closer eye on the pellets and don’t use meat that has sat in the fridge for a long time. Sorry no pictures. I really need to work on my picture taking but trust me you didn’t miss anything.

I've had the same thing happen when the firepot builds up with ash and the igniter gets covered up.. (and I had knocked the igniter out of alignment when I was reassembling the grill the night before)

Cue the seriously scary amount of white smoke.

yeah be careful when you ope the lid when it is smoking like that it is really starving for oxygen and can give you a little explosion....

The real rule of thumb is to always check the fire pot.if it is full it really can ruin a cook and even have the fire go out.
