I'm Defecting Back To The Other Side

First off, let me say my Memphis Advantage is quite the quality piece but that being said, I'm not achieving what I want from the grill. I miss the smokey flavor I used to get from my Kamado and I think I want to defect back to cooking on the open fire (Blasphemy, I know).
The unit is in pristine condition and I would like to know how or if I can sell it here on the forum. Willing to make a great deal if you're willing to come get it. I live in Northern Virginia.

Thanks.

Before you sell your grill may I suggest looking at a small investment compared to your grill purchase too increase the amount of smoke before you sell your new grill... Check out the A-MAZE-N smoker, works with pellets and burns clean with no creosote, just consistent quality smoke. If Big Poppa approves I will post a code for additional savings on purchasing one of these. I own a couple of them, with that said I want to say I do not manufacture, retail or have any financial gain with this product; just would like to see warbirdfan not feel the need to sell his new grill.

but I understand if you are looking for the open fire the amaze wont do it...Thats why I have the hasty bakes for searing and the charcoal effect.

Without a doubt, the pellet smoker is a marvel of convenience and I'm willing to try the A-Maze-N smoker. Question, though. Does the thing work well at higher temps? Say doing wings at 350, will it still make smoke or just burn up quickly because of the higher temp?
Also, couldn't find any active discounts codes. Maybe PM me if you know of something.

Don't get me wrong here, but you are not talking about bbq at 350, your grilling. Are you ever going to get the smoke flavor of a weber with a bunch of wood chips on the coals cooking for 30 minutes? NO! But l let me ask you this, are you ever going to get the smoke ring on a weber or propane grill on a 12 hour cook that you will on a pellet grill? HEll NO! There is nothing wrong with having both. Dont throw the baby away with the bath water. Just my humble opinion.

Don't give up warbirdfan - stick around and check out everyone's cooking process and see if you can do something different.

There is a reason those grills are so popular and have such a following by people. They are excellent grills/smokers!!

How many cooks have you done with it? What temp are you cooking your food at? Even the brand of pellets will make a world of difference. The BBQr's Delight are great pellets and much better than most on the market. Check them out in the "shop" section at the top of this page.

Ask tons a questions.... that's the only way to learn.

i just want to point out that the advantage is a very clean smoker. it burns efficiently w/ a light smoke. buy a mak and you won't miss the smoke. they smoke very well.

First time post.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but wanted to chime in with my disappointments with previous smoker/grills.
Started with a vertical $50 brinkman water smoker- worked, but impossible to keep temp well regulated, and forget about it if the wind kicks up.
Got an insulted electric (matter built) on impulse buy at Sams club. Basically an insulated oven using one element to heat and generate smoke from a pathetically small smoke tray. Used a couple times with major frustration. Eventually and recently modified it with a Bradley smoke generator pumping in the smoke, and the master built for the temp control. Better but with limitations.

I'd like to find a better option, and I've turned to this forum for help.

I'd like the ability to turn up the heat to cook fast or as some call it "power cooking", just like the original poster is looking for.
I'd like an insulated smoker to retain temps better - I have bad luck and it's ALWAYS windy when I smoke.
I'd like a smoker that is easy to clean
I like the ease of electric temp control and digital controls, but options for charcoal and real wood are also a plus and desired
I'd like a unit that can withstand a little rain if it starts to sprinkle or storm during an extended smoke session.
I'd like an easily moved unit that I can roll onto my patio on weekends and then roll back into storage shed or garage when I'm done.

I've been looking at websites, and trying to find the right match. I've got a large list of wants in a smoker grill there I know.
So far I've seen the websites for Bradley, Traeger, Ole Hickory, Lang, Backwoods, Stumps (seems like its partially non functioning). I'm planning to investigate some other manufacturers as well: kamodo, MAK, big poppa.

Any advice or recommendations? It might turn out that in order to get Everything on my list, that I'd need 2 products: a grill, and a smoker.

A small aside to an above comment about propane. It is very convenient and fast method of grilling for a busy family, especially on weeknights and often requires little or no advance preparation. Mostly therefore, I think it's a matter of time in prep, use, and cleanup that makes propane grills so popular. I have one and will continue to own and operate one. I think charcoal fired grills offer superior flavor compared to propane. I'd like ability to use a smoker as a charcoal grill, but I'm thinking that Isnt going to be a very realistic goal

TrickyD, You might want to check out the MAK. I've never heard of a complaint about them. BP can certainly help with that and other grills also. And welcome to the forum.

Thanks.

I've been browsing the BP site. Lots there. I'm in the middle of an addition to my home. Was planning to put in and Alfresco Propane grill. I see there are some built in BBQ/Grill options.
Memphis Pro & maybe the MAK 2 star could be built in. Hope the contractor hasn't purchased the grill yet...

Dick should be a separate thread because you open up so many of the conisderations trying to find one tool that works for you. The closest to a swill army knife is a pellet cooker. It produces a light smoke, (some want more) has great temp control, easy peasey as sparky says....Searing it does a great jhob of faking...good enough...if you want the best sear it is charcoal hands down.

I want to address the myth of quick cooking...MOst people fire up their gasser and 5 minutes later or less plop the food on it. It isnt ready yet....to properly preheat them is a good ten minutes...a pellet grill is abpout 15-20 so not much difference....If you start your cooker and then go prep your food it is usually great timing.

On the insulated front the thickness of the metal is probably close to as important...also insulated with air is not as good....

You mention Backwoods I LOVE THEM...but it is a specialty smoker...I have a chubby in my back yard but I have 12 grills and smokers or more at all times. ON the built in side there is only the memphis pro and the larger new memphis pro elite....the only other built in I sell is a charcoal grill by Hasty Bake which is one of my favorites.....but it requires technique and attention.

You can always call us and we will tell you our experience....877 828 0727

Thanks. I called and spoke with a nice girl who told me all about the Memphis Pro. I'll wait until the the 2012 version is out, and told my contractor to put that in. I guess I won't be having a propane grill after all! I gave the contractor your info, but ultimately his decision on where he buys it. About the only thing I won't be able to do is make my jerk foods with pimento charcoal and sticks, but otherwise the pellet grill/smoker sounds great. I hope it'll give me a great smoke ring.

Thanks and sorry for the thread hijack...

There are ways to increase the good looks quotient... but it usually involves an import from KS :) hahaha.

Hey Tricky... if you playing with pimento charcoal and sticks, you should look at the Hasty Bake BP mentioned. I believe the Fiesta is the built in. It would be a pretty sweet unit, if you didnt mind the charcoal. or your drop it in right next to the pellet pit...
