Looking for new Smoker

HogSmoker pretty much summed up what I was going to say. I have no problems cooking entire meals on our MAK 1 Star. Plus you're most likely going to end up spending the money anyway. So why not save on shipping & go for the quality you'll get in a MAK?

Another bad part is MAK does not have a dealer anywhere near me.

Here in Ohio and the best & closest MAK dealer is located just a phone call or mouse click away at the top of this website! You simply cannot find any dealer that will treat you better than BigPoppaSmokers - guaranteed!

Wouldnt trade my Mak 1 Star for anything....well....maybe a 2 star =) I bought the 1 Star Special from Big Poppa's web site. Never saw one in person, just trusted the ppl here. No regrets at all. Service from Big Poppa and his staff are the best hands down. The quality of the Mak is just superb.

I am in the same boat...I haven't made up my mind yet...still do not know if I want the YS640 or wait an extra month or two to get the 2 Star! I am also concerned about the weather I am from the East Side of WA and we get below 0 in most winters and a foot of snow in a blink of an eye.

I am in Minnesota too. I bought my 2 Star after much research on this forum. I have had it almost a year and am very happy with my decision. I have cooked in temps as low as single digits with no problem. You do need to stay out of the wind as much as possible, just like any other grill in the winter. I have also added the remote boss which in cold temps is a great addition. I have not seen anything like that on other grills. I bought the MAK pack with the cover, frog ,mats, and grill grates. Added two upper racks. You will not be disapointed with any of the MAK products, or the service from Big Poppa. I live in the north metro. Let me know if you would like to see one in action.

Thanks all...customer service is actually a commitment not a buzz word here.

The difference in the MAK is that it is a cooks tool...from the accessories custom designed for it to the pellet boss to the upcoming wifi bluetooth control...Bob and co never stop improving and adding to the experience. Nobody can touch that. sorry just the facts.

I do not have a pellet smoker yet, but have decided on the 2 Star due to the ppl on this forum. Have selected Big Poppa as the place I will make the purchase for the same reason. I made the choice for the 2 Star without seeing one. Without personally witnessing a cook on one. I am in Northern Virginia and don't think anyone within a couple hundred miles has one, let alone a dealer. As others have said, check out BP's site. FREE SHIPPING. 'Nuff said. The only reason that tank is not on my deck right now is I have been getting the funds together for almost a year. If the VA doesn't screw me again, I should be good to clear my CART with a purchase within the next two weeks.

Whatever your final decision, please don't make it without giving Big Poppa Smokers a chance.

I like the way you think my brother! The patience will pay off in the end. That's what we did and still are doing (there will be another grill in our future from BPS).

I was going to mention this in my above post. The Mak 1 Star is $1,299. That's $25/week for 1 year and you have a quality American made grill that will last. Heck most families spend more than that eating Pizza or fast food!

Thank you for all our help. I am still torn between the Yoder and Mak 1. They both are awesome but I like the thickness of the Yoder. Does anyone know if the software on the Mak 1 is able to update like the Yoder? I wish the Mak 1 came in Stainless Steel.

I wish the Mak 1 came in Stainless Steel.

the yoder is not stainless steel. and the yoder doesn't have the pellet boss which does everything. 3 food probes that you can program w/ the mak. tell the mak to smoke for 2 hours then go to 225° until your meat hits 195° and then shut off. a yoder won't do that. the maks have a griddle, searing bars, probes and mak daddy is making new stuff all the time. look at the new drip pan system. very cool. i am sure the yoder is a good cooker but i believe the mak has more to offer.

Sparky, One thing that is pushing me away from the MAK is the total weight of it. I am a very picky shopper and study items before I urchase them and have already put alot of time into this purchase. Like I have said in previous posts my budget does not support the MAK 2 star. Another option I like on the Yoder is the temp starts at 150. I like to smoke at lower temps for longer time periods. I do not know if 20 degrees is a big deal but is a difference between the two.

304 stainless steel is magnetic, meaning you can stick a magnet to it; pure stainless steel will not allow a magnet to stick to it. While 304 stainless steel is basically coated steel that is prone to corrosion, you can keep it looking relatively good for several years if you take good care of it.

Mak 2 Star General - 14 gauge steel on the cooking chamber, 16 gauge steel on the hopper.
Yoder YS640 & YS480 - 10 gauge steel on cooking chamber, 14 gauge steel on the hopper.

So that is my weight question answered. I just looked at a steel chart and it shows 10 guage steel is twice as thick as 14 guage steel. So is the MAK 304 stainless steel? Yes I know the Yoder is not Stainless Steel aand I think the style of the Yoder would look funny in SS. It looks nice on the Mak 2 star though. I know I will over think my purchase like most things I purchase but in the end everything I purchase I am happy with

the yoder is painted and that will also be a maintenance issue. THe yoders are pretty though and heavy....I can tell you the yoder is like a pick up the mak like a sports car. Which ever you choose Im sure you will be happy
