Mak Grill Ash-cleanout door?

Just got 977 up and running. However we have had a bit of a question about the cleanout door.

The screw which is put into the door does nothing. The door doesn't close far enough in order for it to screw up against the bottom of the grill. When the door is fully closed, you can still see the screw through the inside square 'trap' door. As can be seen in the picture.

If I turn it around, so that the door is put in 'backwards' the screw is then covered, however, this would entail pushing the trap-door 'away' from you (towards the back) in order to open, thereby the ash would fall down upon your hand as you did so. The drawings clearly show the door being placed from the front.

What gives?

This doesn't seem correct, or if it is... I am missing the function of this engineering.

So it is supposed to be in the open 'square' and keep the door from being completely removed when opening and clean? I think I see... my son was putting it together and now that I think about it, he put a lock washer on the screw, which would keep it from being deep enough to catch. That is probably why it pulled out and didn't hold anything. I see now... at least I believe I do.

yes, no washer and the screw threads in from the bottom so you would see the threads inside the grill.
if you can come up with an idea of how to omit the screw let me know, I never liked it but it does do the job.
