We don't want the grill running at a high temp without control of it. The smoke setting can "hold" the food without overcooking until you fix the issue.

That's a well thought out argument. I hate it when that happens! But maybe we can talk about what happens to cause the grill to lose wifi in the first place and figure out if there's a way to recover from it. Does it lose a signal and give up? Does it retry? How many times?

LOL, We love all the ideas though!
Really it has a lot to do with your local internet, router signal etc.
We are working on finding better ways to re-connect when its lost. Currently the grill will try for 15 minutes before timing out but the web side doesn't always play nice.

Well can I run a Remote Boss with my grill if I have the WiFi option? Does the RB have the same issues if it loses a connection? Can I control everything from the RB?

First, there are no issues with the wifi lost connection settings, it is designed to switch to smoke.

Yes and no. The socket for the Bluetooth chip is the same as the wifi chip so they cant both be used at the same time.
But if you buy the Remote Boss with a sending unit it will work by plugging it into meat probe 3 and you can leave your wifi plugged in.
You cant use both at the same time regardless. The wifi takes control of the pellet boss when in use and if you change anything at the grill (or on the remote) it will kick you off the wifi.

The Remote Boss is a mirror of the Pellet Boss, whatever you change on one will change on the other. If the remote loses connection the grill will maintain whatever set points you were on.

Hi,

Wanted to chime in. I recently added the wifi to my 4 star. One weekend the family was out of town and I put on a chuck roast to smoke for dinner. I had planned to monitor it with my iPhone and had programmed in what I wanted it to cook at. I tried to set alerts with a cooking program but couldn't figure out how to do it, for flipping, panning, pulling, etc. My grill ended up powering itself off early in the cook. Not sure why. I ended up setting it the manual way, and used meat probe alerts. Sending me a text would've been better. I need to figure out how to do that.

I think there is a glitch in the mobile app for the four star. For one thing, the fire pot right or left seems to display on right even when you select left.

Also wish could set it to start the grill when you push the power button to begin in web control mode, without having to switch it every time.

If you need help setting up cooking programs, text notifications etc. just shoot us an email or give us a phone call.


The web control on the pellet boss is defaulted to be "on" when you turn on the power (if it detects the Wi-Fi chip).
If this isn't working that way contact us and we will troubleshoot with you.

The 1 & 2 Star web control is default "off" currently but will be changing to "on" next year with the release of V2.9.

Yes, most all versions can be updated if you like by contacting us to ship out an update module.
Eventually we hope to be able to update through the Wi-Fi.

Did a cook this weekend and didn't use the program but instead just programmed temps for each probe and it worked good to text me for each probe as they hit temp. Would be nice to be able to do a program that would save the cook temp and the temps for the food probes. I like to save the cook temps and the probe temps. Love my MAK 2 star

So maybe what I'm looking for is wifi 'monitoring' without the grill looking to the internet for cooking instructions. As the poster above was saying, I'd love to be able to see all my probe temps and the grill temp, get texts when things hit temps but not have the grill set point rely on the wifi connection. I'm not doing any crazy set point programming any way.
Not sure how this plays out as possible given how the hardware seems to be designed as an all or nothing, wifi or not system.

You can make a cooking program and save it under any name you like to use over and over. Inside the steps of the program you can set the probe alarms and name the steps too. You don't have to change grill temps just choose the same temp as the previous step. The text notifications will happen every time the cooking program changes steps (in your case when the meat probe reaches a certain temp).
Example, name cooking program "Brisket" start at set point 225, add step 1 set point 225 meat probe 165 foil, step 2 set point 225 meat probe 195 (remove). The grill will never change set point temp but you will get a text at each step change (you can name the steps whatever you want).

You can also set probe alarms on the main screen like you described above, in that section you can add names of foods and attach a set point to them to use over and over. Example, I can add "brisket" at 195 and it will be in there every time I want to pick that MP alarm.

It's the same thing, you don't have to change the grill temp when using the Wi-Fi just monitor the pit temp and probes. If you loose connection nothing will be able to be monitored or changed. I would suggest a signal booster to try to solve your lost connection issues first, if you need help call us.

If you are always around the grill the remote boss might be a better fit for you.

1) Correct, if you manually change the grills set point on the pellet boss it will disconnect from the Wi-Fi. If using Wi-Fi you would want to change the grills temperature on MAK grills mobile.

2) No, you would need to set the cooking program up on the web and monitor the probes and temps thereafter.

With the remote boss you can do both of these manually.

Big Mistake! Sold my boss for the wifi. I agree its not perfect but much better than the pellet boss.

I smoke several items at the same time and would like to save the MP temps, pit temp. Then be able to have it go to smoke when the last MP hits temp. It saved a brisket for me when I fell asleep. I had the program set to go to smoke when the brisket hit 200. I am a computer consultant and have degree in programming. So I know I will push it and understand it will take time. Another software I use took 2 years to get one enhancement. But in the end it will be better. After today reading about Toyota getting sued over a program in a car I understand it is safer if you loose wifi to go to smoke. But since the web site knows my grill it would be nice for it to resume the program when wifi returns within a longer time. Thank you
