My name is Darren and I am a (soon to be) pellet smoker from Denver. Yoder or MAK?

Hello everyone. I moved to Denver from Kansas City and miss good BBQ. I have decided to take matters in to my own hands and procure a new smoker. I will be smoking for a family of 4 with a couple possible dinner guests. I am torn between the Yoder YS640 and the MAK 1-Star General. The Yoder is built like a tank but the Pellet Boss of the MAK is impressive. I guess I like the idea of the flexibility and configuration options of the Pellet Boss but the Yoder should last until the apocalypse. Any thoughts?

Comparing the Yoder with the MAK is like comparing apples and oranges. I went through the process earlier in the year. I feel I researched both very well to include cooking on both and observing them in competition. Both are built well but what sold me was the difference in innovation. I felt that the Yoder, although a pellet cooker maintained the same profile/identity as other heavy offset smokers whereas the MAK had a future vision and built a smoker that supports that vision, examples being built in meat probes, remote and WiFi and stainless steel components. I am sure food cooked on both is great but I decided an a MAK 2 Star and have been nothing but super happy since I moved to the MAK. I believe you need to choose what works for you but please give the MAK a long hard look.

Fantastic input. I am starting to feel the same way after further research. The MAK controller seems leaps and bounds above the Yoder. I wish I could put the Pellet Boss in the Yoder and make the perfect combination.

I agree with having the pellet boss on the yoder and there is the ultimate pellet grill ever made. The next choice since yoder does not have the pellet boss is to go with the Mak. That's what I did. Love the MAK!

Yoder, change out your control panel and you just may have something to brag about. Peace

We looked at both as well...the Pellet Boss made our decision easy! Plus...the MAK is a LOT lighter to transport!

Welcome to the forum Darren. I think both the MAK and Yoder are great tools, however, the MAK offers more diversification than the Yoder and now you even have Wifi and a front shelf. What's MAK going to come up with next? Which ever cooker you decide on I'm sure you'll have many hours of pleasure cooking on a great pit.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome. I love the idea of configuration diversification which I am sure has its applications in the smoking world. I am not experienced enough yet to understand how this will benefit me but it must somehow. I have read cooks smoking a brisket at 180 for an hour and then ratchet the temp up to 225 for many more hours and the Pellet Boss allows for this automatically. It will be a blast learning. I hope the build quality is high enough so that I get many years of use.

Having used the wifi module for a couple of months now I cant tell you how cool it is. Go with the Mak. And while your at it get it from the best dealer in the USA Big Poppa!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond with your input on my dilemma, albeit a good dilemma. I am a new resident here but plan on being around for a while, and maybe someday be able to help a neophyte like myself. Happy smoking to everyone!

Welcome to the forum, from NE Ohio!

I called Big Poppa Smokers and I will be ordering the Mak 1 Special on Friday. Excited beyond words.

I can imagine your excitement! Adding an upper half rack (or two) plus the griddle & split grate makes the 1 Star a whole lot more versatile.
