Welcome Ed. i have a lil tex and have replaced my hot rod three times in a little over a year. Call Traeger... The last hotrod was a little different than the others so I'm hoping that it is the last one that I'll have to change out.
My LIL TEX had a problem right out of the box. The GFI tripped after about 2 minutes. After a couple hours work I found the wiring to the auger and the rod were reversed causing the rod to burn continually. I think the electrical resistance was reduced enough to trip the GFI. After correcting the wiring, it worked perfectly for about a month then tripped the GFI again. I think the second failure may have been related to the original problem . I advised Traeger support and they sent a new rod. meanwhile I will light it up manually to get those ribs on Monday. Happy Labor Day to all.
I've been through 1 hot rod in my Lil Tex. Knock on wood this one is holding up, as it is a bit of a bear to swap out. I keep a spare in my workbench just in case..
I couldn't "afford" the MAK at first either so bought the Lil Tex, but 4 months after purchasing my Traeger, I sold it to buy the MAK. Lost some money on the sale of the Traeger. Sometimes the "savings" in the front end of the deal evaporate later.
