OK to be honest, new pellet smoker; just picked up my Daniel Boone by GMG yesterday. Finished putting it together at dusk, and got the initial burn in done by 9:30 PM.

I won't be able to get the first real cook done until this weekend. Anyone have a opinion what the initial first cook should be; what cut of meat? Trying to avoid a major disappointment so looking for somthing fairly bullet proof. Need to make the wife think this was a good idea, she saw all the smoke from the initial burn-in and got scared that this would be what she would see and smell everytime we crank it up.

Besides pig candy, not a bad idea to bake some biscuits, the pills bury kind in the tube. Spread them over the entire cooking surface. This will help you find the hot spots in your unit.

Good luck. Post pictures

Gregg -- Picked up my Traeger last Sunday night about 6 p.m.; burned it in thenafter it cooled, heated it up again and threw on some frozen burgers. Cooked 10 mins on one side, 15 on the other. They were perfect. best burgers we had since I did them on charcoal last spring. My wife was then sold that it was a good idea. On Wednesday night did three half racks of ribs to test rubs. Again they were perfect. Planned on giving half a rack to a neighbor but we ate them all. Now, wife's not just sold, she's become a true believer. As for me, I don't have a clue about what I'm doing but my wife thinks I'm a genius.

Welcome both you guys! (that statement is really funny). I got my pellet grill a little over a year ago and my wife completely did not understand why I would spend so much on another grill. Since we got the MAK we have not even turned on the gasser again. Everything comes out really good on these pellet poopers!
I would cook something familar and simple for the first cook. Bacon cheeseburgers for example. Bacon is incredible on these!
Pork is also a great way to start since it is very forgiving.
Just remember to ask lots of questions and if there are no pics then it did not happen!

Where are y'all from anyway?

Welcome from Central Illinois. And I always thought it was a good idea to do a pork butt for your first cook. It is hard to mess up a pork butt. If you need a simple recipe, simply Google the Chris Lilly recipe. It is fairly standard and has a good flavor. You don't even need to wrap it during the cook, just pull it at 192°, let it rest for an hour with some FTC, and it will be nice and chunky. Love it.

Welcome aboard Greg! I would suggest a fattie - fun to make, taste is awesome!, and really hard to mess up.

Welcome to the forum Gregg. Any thing you cook on a gas grill or on your stove you can cook on the DB. Just jump in with both feet and cook what she likes best. Good luck and good cooking.

Thanks everyone, just did a pork roast last week on the Webber, so the wife may not go for a shoulder this week, but it would be great. I hope the pork candy doesn't get too expensive this year, plan to increase my consumption this year.It is the other white meat.

May do a beef roast, haven't had a good slicer for some time. A nice smoke ring and pink center sounds good, bake a couple of potatoes, grill some asparagus.
