New Pellet Cooker

Hi All - just joined the site & have made the decision to buy my first pellet grill. Been doing alot of research & decided on the Memphis Advantage. I am wondering if you need the optional direct flame insert if you buy the grill grates? Is having one better than the other or are both best when grilling steaks? Thanks for your help!

My initial thought would be no, you don't need the grill grates. I think there would be plenty enough heat to get a good sear with the direct flame insert. I can't say for sure, but that's my thought.

If you can afford both, get them. The GrillGrates do put some nice grill marks on the food.

If I could only get one or the other, I think I'd opt for the direct flame insert. That way you're getting actual flame-kissed searing. I'm seeing some great searing coming off of Memphis grills with the direct flame insert and the stock grates.
