hey all,

i have a primo ceramic and like it but don't love the effort dealing with the coal, lighting etc....

hows pellet smokers ? pro/cons vs ceramic??

i like the idea of having a direct and indirect area....

was originally looking at the fast eddie but then the mak...

help me with this journey and why i should add a pellet to my gas and ceramics???

I have both the fe1000 and primo xl. Still love cooking on pellets but occasionally like to switch it up.

As far as Gas vs. Pellets... No competition! With pellet cookers you get the convenience of a gas grill but a whole lot more flavor!

I have never cooked on a ceramic. a Pellet cooker is throw the switch set the temp and cook in a few minutes. Nothing more, no vent adjustments etc. We have WSM before the pellet cooker and still use from time to time. As jmeitz pointed out you will still use the ceramic once in awhile.

I have a primo, 2 komodo kamados and 3 bge's and I never light them I think they are fine for searing but I dont personally like them for low and slow even though they can do that I just taste charcoal....I use them for searing but really I use my hasty bakes and meadow creeks much more...The ceramic is incredibly versitile but not near as easy and controlled

very interesting posts..

what i hate about the ceramic is lighting...getting it burning hot enough... and hands turning black from coal....

a few follow up questions...

what is the pro/cons of the different brand/model pellet units?

does stuff dry out with out the ceramic shell?

thanks

NO it doesnt dry ou I am a dealer remember but I only sell what I think is great....thats why I dont sell some brands out there I am partial to MAK and Memphis in that order. That order can change depending on the bulk of your planned usage.

My neighborhood is full of BGE guys. They all lust for my Traeger.... It's a pretty upscale subdivision and I think they did the BGE more as a status symbol. The good cooks that I know with BGE's turn out great cooks. But firing up the BGE is not something many people do for something after work, it's just too much work. Most of the BGE's however are just sitting around with covers on them, next to their gassers... Weber Summits... Now that is one fine gasser.

The more I use my Traeger, the more I like it. I have totally embraced the flavor profiles available with it. I will never part with my WSM or my Summit, but the Traeger is my everyday go to grill. If I had a MAK, I probably would never use my Summit, Sometmes, I just miss the sear that my Lil Tex can not do.

well i ordered the mak 2 with all the accessories and a few different types of pellets...

it will look a little out of place as my gas grills and ceramic are part of my outdoor kitchen...

the mak 2 star will be its own free standing unit...

I'm looking forward to easy cooks/smokes going forward....

IMHO You did the right thing Larry. If I were doing it today, I would have a MAK2 on my deck right now... I am slightly envious, and I am sure your neighbors and friends will be too... Congratulations

It won't look out of place at all. But it will be the center of attention when you have people over! I still cook on all my outdoor toys but my MAK gets the most love.
You are absolutely going to love your MAK!

Poppa is right, i put it on hold ...

only reason is due to slightly confused and not for any other reason.

Had a great talk with poppa this am on the subject and i just decided to just think about it for a day or 2 to make sure i don't second guess my decision.

I appreciate everyones help and comments... it is apparent that all MAK users are very pleased with their units, that says a lot and I'm sure once i decide if its a MAK i will love it every time i use it

By the end of this week I'm making my mind up and moving forward. but this way i can confuse myself a little while deciding for an extra day or 2.......LOL

BTW, cooked some steaks on my primo ceramic tonight...came out great..but dreaming of just pushing a button on the pellet units...... nice and easy....

Again , many thanks to everyones comments, it is appreciated

You can't go wrong with the MAK, Larry. I've had mine six weeks, and the ease of cooking with it is amazing. It is a purchase where I have had no buyer's remorse.
