Question about the tube smoker

What is the lowest temp the pellets in the tube start smoking when it is placed on the same grates the food is on.

I think I understand what you're asking.

Are you wondering if the grate level gets hot enough to cause a tube full of pellets to start smouldering? And if so, at what temp?

You'd have to be running the grill pretty hot, at searing temps, for pellets to even start smouldering. And even then it wouldn't be very efficient.

Or are you wondering how much heat the pellet tube gives off while using it?

The best comparison I can think of is to say it gives off about the same amount of heat as a low wattage soldering iron.

Hopefully this helps!

I guess I could have worded it a little better. I was wondering if the tube would work if placed on the cooking grates & if so, what the lowest temp setting it would produce smoke. If its not supposed to go on the grates, where would you place it on a Mak 2 star to get more smoke at the lower temp settings

It will work on the grate just fine. That's where most folks are placing their tubes.

The tube works on its own whether your grill is on or not, so there is no "lowest temp setting" for the tube to produce smoke.

Here are a few threads that might be helpful:

Hopefully RickB & others who have a MAK 2 Star and a tube smoker can chime in with where the sweet spot is for placing the tube.
