Want to buy a RecTec mini but every time I see a video on Rec Tecs I never see much smoke coming out even at lower temps. Are they too efficient? Do they produce that great smoke flavor or do you need a smoker tube. Thank you.
The Rec Tec Minis are so new I don't know how they are working as far as smoke level, etc.
I don't care for where they placed the back vent slots. They are right near the top which I think would allow heat and smoke to escape from the top too quickly. But then again, I'm not an engineer.
Yep, the MAK 1 & 2 Star are know for producing a little more smoke than most other pellet grills.
With my MAK 1 Star the only time I really need to use a tube is when I want a deep penetrating smoke, that only a cold-smoke can provide, for things such as homemade Bacon, smoked sausage, hams etc.
BUT I have done all of those without a tube, with the MAK running just in smoke mode, and they are still nice and smoky.
Now granted, it's still going to be different from a stick burner where it's very easy to over-smoke food.
I was skeptical, too. My MAK has far exceeded my expectations in the smokey flavor department. I may never fire up my offset cooker again. I NEVER thought I'd say that!
It's all about time and temperature. And maybe which pellets you use (although I have tried about 4 brands and they all rock)...
I have cooked on both the 1 & 2 Stars. Other than the 2 Star's cold smoke chamber, and being a bit larger, they basically cook the same from what I can tell. They both sport the same Pellet Boss controller.
