Shopping for a pellet grill

Hi I'm in the market for a pellet grill. Currently, I'm using a Chargriller charcoal grill with an offset fire box. I'd like a grill that can get hot as I will be doing more grilling than smoking. So far I'm looking at the Yoder YS640 and the MAK 2 star. I'd appreciate any input as I only know what I've read and have only seen these units on you tube.

I usually follow the board without posting, but the search function will answer your question along with many others. I have the YS640, and simply love it. I can't speak on anything else. Good Luck with whichever you choose.

I have a MAK 4 Star. I orginally ordered the 2 Star after doing a great deal of research. I just wanted something built-in which is why I went with the bigger unit. No complaints since getting the MAK. All stainless steel components and a fantastic interface in the pellet boss. Wifi control is great. We're thinking about moving and, if need be, I'll be ordering another MAK.

What is your budget? RecTec about $1k is a good one. Yoder YS640 are popular. There are many pellet grills. It all depends on how it will be used and your budget. Good Luck.

A new Rec Tec was delivered on Thursday. I have only done a meatloaf on it but tomorrow I am doing 4 racks of spares for the family. so far I love it..well built, up to temp in a hurry and holds temp spot on. I did a lot of research and I think there are several good ones on the market...the Rec Tec fit my needs and budget and machine and Customer Service is rated 5-stars by 99% of the users

If you do your research you will be able to separate the players from the posers. The time proven quality innovators that put pellet smoking on the map from the late arrivals cashing in on the wave created by the front runners.
Buy the best and only cry once.

I have a 2 Star and love it. That said, I know plenty that love their Yoder. You might want to consider a Memphis as well, as it probably gets as hot as any pellet grill. Good luck on your search.

My wife and I have a Yoder YS640 and are very happy with it. Neither of us have any experience with any other pellet grills but I can tell you it is a steak grilling machine when equipped with GrillGrates and we really like it can be set as low as 150º and will achieve temps of 600º plus.

I suspect you will find that most people on this forum or any other forum will suggest you get what they have, unless they are really unhappy with the product they are using. I have a Traeger #75, but my advice to you would not be to buy a Traeger, my advice would be to look around and see what other people really like, and find out where you can see one of those smoker's in action. I like my Traeger okay, but would not support them again since their smoker's are now made in China. Call me narrow minded if you wish, that is just how I feel. If I were going to start over with a new smoker, I would build it myself. Over the years I've looked at many plans, and I've done a lot of reading, and I know exactly what I would do. The problem for me is using a smoker on my back deck, and also having wheels under it so I can take it to the park to cook for a group. The simple solution is to have more than one smoker. My Traeger has a grill area of 15" by 34", but the one I cook on at our park is owned by our shooting club and measures 6' by 3' and uses a 20# propane tank instead of pellets. A gas grill is handy but doesn't compare to the flavor you can get from something that uses wood/pellets and makes lots of smoke...

If you do more high heat grilling then smoking, but want pellet smoking convenience and capability, go for the Memphis line. They have the highest heat output of the pellet grills to my understanding.

Check out the new Black Olive Kamadoo type Pellet Smoker/Grill. It looks like a Big Green Egg but is a Pellet Smoker/Grill. As an old Primo Kamadoo Smoker/Grill user I can state that these outdoor ovens hold temps between 150 and greater than 650 with ease. That allows you to grill a steak easily, bake a pizza or smoke brisket low and slow. The Pellets are what set this unit apart from the BGE. No wood or coals to tend. WOrth looking at in your case. I have no idea of price but I suspect highly competitive to the BGE.

How is the smoke output on the Yoder YS480 or 640?
There is only one video on youtube that I can find and it looks like very little smoke is rolling. A lot less than my 10 year old Traeger.
