The Dreaded 6th Judge

I want to tell you guys a little about Comp BBQ...there are six judges for each meat you turn in....the lowest judges score gets dropped.....so its five scores for Appearance, taste and tenderness....

The 6th judge is satan. He is a door knob.....she is a witch.

Today we got hit by the dreaded 6th judge....in chicken we tie for first. all 9's and some 8's...the tie breaker is the scores from the 6th judge whose scores now count. He gave us 6 for appearance, 5 for taste, and 5 for tenderness....no comment card.....a 655 chicken is something that you would not want to eat.

I wish they would track these guys vs their tables.....a 655?

That's messed up. As someone who just went thru CBJ class I kind of have an idea what a 655 takes to get and there's no way a tie-breaker entry for first is anywhere close to that.

And no comment card to boot. Ridiculous.

My view is a 6 without a comment card is the table captains responsibility to ask that judge for one. A 5 it should be mandatory .

Perhaps a judging rule change would be in order. I know almost "0" about Comp."Q", but as a Certified BJCP judge (Beer Judge Certification Program), the 5 sensory categories get scored with comments for each. Aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression comments need to reflect the score given. If they don't, the judge needs to re-assess their evaluation and correct the score sheet.

Plus Jim you have tasted our chicken....655? now way...The west coast MAk chicken cookers are all very very good....Lamar from who's smokin now Matt from left coast and us. This sounds bold but we dont cook anything 655. The table captain should have taken care of it Once again let me say that I dont want this to take away from Lamar....couldnt be happier and he knows that and it didnt make a difference on the results.....we are cooking this season for individual category rankings
