Traeger issues… Replacing it with a built-in...

9 months ago I purchased a Traeger Little Tex Elite after talking to a rep at Costco. It was an impulse buy but I have fallen in love with pellet smoking. I just wish I would have done more research up front because I am about to return my second Traeger to Costco. The first one a purchased started blowing fuses the second time I used it and the Traeger I’m about to return has in issue with the fire randomly going out during long smokes. It has something to do with the electrical because I can’t relight it until I mess with all the wiring below and it’s totally unpredictable. Trager tech support told me to adjust the P setting but that’s another story. Regardless, it has ruined a few parties and most recently ruined an 8 pound brisket on my birthday that I ended up having to toss in the oven. Long story short, I am doing my research and it doesn’t look like Traeger makes the best pellet smokers. From my research it sounds like a lot of people go with a MAK or a Memphis and I’m looking for a first hand advice. I know this is a common forum question but I’ll give some specifics to make it more unique.

* I’m about to do I backyard remodel and it would be nice to buy a smoker I can build in to an outdoor kitchen.

* I like to entertain. I have crammed 8 racks onto my smoker and on Thanksgiving smoked two 18 pound turkeys in my Traeger. The turkeys were a tight fit but they turned out so good I would like to make it a tradition. This being said I don’t have an unlimited amount of room for my planned out door kitchen so I don’t want anything too big.

* I am very disported in my Traeger’s ability to grill steaks. Until I started doing my research I planned on putting a built-in gas grill and a built in smoker. It sounds like the Memphis has a direct flame insert and the MAC has a searing option. If I can avoid buying a gas grill that frees up budget for a nicer smoker. From your experiences do the MAC and/or Memphis do a good job searing steaks? Another thought would to do a built in searing station but that could take away from my smoker budget.

*Speaking of budget, $2k - $3k is my range but I may be able to go a little higher if the value is there and I can grill on it.

I’m not set on just the MAK or Memphis but it sounds like those are the most popular. I know this is mostly likely a common thread so if it’s easier feel free to point me to a few existing threads. Thanks an advance for your help!

I had a Traeger and upgraded to a MAK 2 Star after about 3 years. The MAK does all I need to include grilling. No complaints, I use it most nights of the week. Right now I have a tri tip finishing up, it is my outdoor oven, grill, smoker, etc. Not much more I can say other than the workmanship is outstanding and I love the all stainless.

The Memphis will get hotter for grilling, but the direct flame insert is pretty much for the center of the grill only. The MAK FlameZone covers all of the grill surface. We have the MAK 1 Star and I am perfectly happy with it's grilling capability.

I think the MAK is, hands down, the most versatile pellet grilling going. I can do anything from smoking sausage or bacon, low & slow BBQ, higher temp roasting & baking to actual grilling. But wait... add the MAK Griddle to that mix and you have expanded what you can do even more!

Couple all of that with what is undoubtedly the best possible customer service, not only from the manufacturer, but the dealer as well (Big Poppa Smokers) and it's a no-brainer... IMHO

Is the only MAK built-in grill the 4 star? From my research I really like the MAK over the Memphis but It looks like I can get a Memphis pro or elite for half the price of a 4 star or less. What other companies make good built in pellet smokers? Have people built 1 star or 2 star MAKs into outdoor built-in kitchens?

Thank you dnew, TentHunter and scooter!
Scooter - I hear you about charcoal and searing but I would love to have a nice clean single unit built-in if possible. I think I would do a searing station if necessary because I’m getting too lazy and impatient for charcoal. I saw your post about your neighbor’s project earlier today and it looks incredible but it also looks like he had to do some mods to pull it off. I was hoping for a unit that was intended to be built in.

In built ins and I mean units that were engineered for it...I love smokeslingers set up,,,IT is pretty much Memphis. The searing on the memphis is fabulous albeit small...IN Jan14 Mak will introduce the Three Star...if you can wait. THe Four Star is the absolute top of the heap and the price puts many off but the ones I have sold are very very happy campers. I sear on a pellet grill but actually went to charcoal awhile back. I think a built in good combo is a hasty bake fiesta built in and a memphis pro....

Another option:

Consider a cut-out for the MAK 2 Star that can be enclosed with a removable panel. That way it has the look of being built-in, but can easily be rolled out for any servicing & cleaning. To me that would be ideal.
