Traeger or Green Mountain??

Here's hoping someone can help me make a decision for a Christmas gift for my husband--trying to decide between a Traeger and a Green Mountain. Both have local dealers, so I have seen both but as a total newbie, I don't know which one to buy. Any suggestions would be helpful!! Thank you so much!

Lots of folks on here like the green mountain, lots like traeger, and lots like Mak. What you should be looking for is how the temperature is controlled. A grill where you can dial in an exact temperature is preferred to one that simply has a 3 position toggle.

From what I have learned thus far, they both have a digital temp controller, but the Green Mountain also comes standard with a meat temperature probe, and it also has a remote to be able to monitor the grill temps from inside the house if necessary--seems like a kind of unnecessary luxury, but what man doesn't like a remote?? The thermal blanket was also recommended to me for winter use--and the rain cover as the grill will live on our patio and our winters in Nebraska can be kind of unpredictable. I have seen comments about both, and they both seem like good units, but I think I am leaning toward the Green Mountain . . . .Thanks for your advice!

You won't be disappointed. The guy who runs this forum also sells Mak grills, and the 1 star comes in at around $1300. Mak really is the king of pellet grills if you can afford it. www.bigpoppasmokers.com

Both Traeger and GMG are entry level pits, they're both made out of the country with thinner gauge metals to keep the cost down. They both have their loyal following. Traeger was the standard when it began and as far as I can tell is still leading the way with sales but have taken the backseat in innovation since the Traeger family sold the business.
You are a special wife to buy a pellet pit for your hubby! For the reasons you stipulated I'd have to agree with your leaning towards the GMG. But consider this, and you know your husband better than us, but if you suspect he will dive into cooking with his new pellet pit then you should consider that he'll want to upgrade sometime in the near future to a pellet pit that is a level above entry.
If you can financially reach a little higher than the GMG now then you may actually save some money by providing him a pellet pit he can keep and not need to upgrade later. Just a thought.

Hi
I have a treager dealer about 1 mile. a GMG dealer 15 miles. i chose Treager, End of season deal.
If i chose today I would go gmg as is sounds like they have better controler, come with a shelf and a meat probe.

My first pellet smoker is a Treager and it came with a 3 switch controller. Please do not buy one with that type of controller. I killed a lot of meat and was going to put it in the dump until I found sites like this. I have since upgreaded the controller and I am now making better and better product. My Treager is up for sale and when sold I will be buying a MAK. That said you have to start somwhere.

I am not promoting any other site but here is one that has I think good product review to help you decide: Pellet Unit Performance Testing

As it was said earlier, if you can afford a MAK I would.
