I have a Bradley and want to move up to a pellet smoker. I see a traeger 124 on Craiglist pretty reasonable. My question is are their only three temp settings? it says digitally controlled but read about three different temp ranges; thanks
My suggestion would be for you to do some research on the subject and then you'll be in a better position to make an informed decision on an important purchase such as a pellet cooker.
The couple of 124's I've seen have the digital controller. I'd contact the seller and ask to be sure. I'd also ask a couple of other questions such as why is he/she selling it? Where they happy with it?
I'm sure you feel like you need to move quickly on this before it gets sold, but I agree with what scooter said. Learn all you can on the subject. If you can afford it, you may want to get into a higher end pellet grill with a warranty.
The Traeger 124 with its front hopper makes it nice where space is limited, because of the front hopper the feed tune is short which can let the heat of the fire get close to the hopper. Although the purchase price maybe inviting. What you could spend trying to tune it in May make it not so much of a bargain. If it has the three position control you will want to swap that out right away which would add $100. Add if you find any component needs replacing. Rack drip pan fire pot etc. All of a sudden a better new pellet grill is not that far out of the budget. Trust me you will use the day lights out of a pellet grill, unlike any outside cooking device you may have
I would also add that there are an abundant amount of discussion threads on this forum where members have discussed at length the virtues of one grill over another and the pros & cons of the features of one grill over the other. I encourage you to make use of those threads and the knowledge they contain.
Filter your search for Traeger and see what experiences members have shared about their Traegers. I started with a new Traeger (Many have) and sold it at a loss 4 months later to upgrade to a higher quality cooker.
I continue to offer up this one pearl of wisdom to people at the doorstep of purchasing their first pellet cooker...buy the best and only cry once.
