Water Pan with Lava Rocks

Does anyone use a water pan filled with red lava rocks in their smoker? I can't remember where I picked up this tip but apparently the red lava rocks soak up the water and create more surface area to allow for greater humidity.

Also, the AMazeN Tube Smoker instructions say not to use a water pan - anyone have any experience with this?

OK you are going to have to do all of this...it is a right of passage...but

The Four Star smokes more than any pellet cooker...the amazin really is not necessary and water pans are sometimes nice but you really can use a very small foil pan with water....all of this is overkill because you bought the best....start factory set and dry and see if you really need moisture too much moisture and you wont get a good bark.....especially if you plan on foiling
