I know I know! Not another thread on this subject! But really, I have read and read and have taken some time to do a write up on what I am really looking for rather than just asking the same old ambiguous question. If you would take the time to read this and post some helpful information, I would greatly appreciate it!
I have been looking at purchasing a pellet grill for some time now. I am looking for suggestions on what pit to go with and why. I realize that is a pretty broad spectrum, so I have taken the time to give you some insight to how I see things and what I am looking for.
Let’s start by letting you know what I appreciate in what I have seen thus far.
Memphis Pro & Elite Models: American Made! The Elite is just a beautiful pit. Everything about it screams quality! I mostly love the high grade stainless and the fact that it’s an insulated pit. Although I am in the Midwest and do not see extremely cold temperatures, I do like benefits that an insulated pit provides. The bad thing is, I could never convince myself or my wife to spend $4,000+ on a grill! I would use it a couple times a week all year long, but Need something under $2,000 for sure.
The first grill I looked at was the Traeger Select, and then the Green Mountain Jim Bowie, then the Yoder YS640, then finally the Memphis line of grills and in that exact order. Honestly each time I started looking at a new brand I felt like it offered better quality than the last. Although value and functionality I am unsure of.
I briefly seen a Rec Tec and a Louisiana, didn’t price them or even explore their different models, but decided at this point I was just getting overwhelmed with so many options. Having No prior experience with a pellet grill, I am looking for some suggestions. I realize that most people think what they have is best and that is fine, just please tell me why. Here is some of what I am looking for in this pit, feel free to offer other suggestions.
1) Functionality: It needs to do its job, and do it well. I want flavorful food! I have read that many people have had problems on what pellets their grill likes and that some grills are picky on what pellets you use. That is not good for me as I live in a pretty remote area. Also that some grills accept a smoke tube better than others. The smoke tube thing is not a big deal, but still plays to the fact I do not want a finicky grill.
2) Quality of Materials: How is this thing gonna hold up? I mean I can go to the "big box store" and buy a $250 stainless gas grill that looks good on the outside after 10 years but the insides have rusted to pieces and fallen apart. If I am going to fork out this much money I want quality materials and a good warranty! Before I discovered pellet style grills, I was sold on Holland as I personally know people who have used them for years and years and they’ve weathered the storm and offer a good warranty, (lifetime even on some parts).
3) Cost: I need this to be under $2,000. $2k, period, with bells whistles extra racks, kits whatever, my budget is firm.
4) Versatility: I like the grills that offer the lower smoking temps but also will heat to 600+ as we eat a lot of Steak!
5) Customer Service: This stuff is man-made and designed by man. Man is not perfect and I do not expect anything we make to be either. However, the degree in which a man stands behind his product is what ultimately shows his commitment to his customers in my book. I will not deal with a company that has a history of giving people the runaround and hasn’t invested in good customer service practices.
There may be more, but that’s all I can think of at this point. So please, suggest away!
