I started this in another thread but felt it deserved its own thread. Here are the original pics with pics of the new progress added at the end.
My neighbor (smokeslinger) is building his MAK 2 Star into a custom island he's building himself. He posted this on another forum but I'm certain he won't mind if I repost it here. Along with his 2 Star he's building in gas burners, a 1400F searing grate, warming drawer, steam table and dual sinks with cold and hot running water and garbage disposal! It's an outdoor chefs dream kitchen!
Smokeslinger put the vent hood farther up on the roofline to get the vent sound as far away as possible

Smokeslinger said:This has been an adventure and its not over. I used two pieces of hardibacker mostly to make up the difference i needed. I had 1/4" and needed to make up another 1/2" for the height i wanted. So, thought outloud why dont i used a piec of 1/2" under the 1/4" and my friend Tom was w me said i hv one. So, there it is the heat proof bottom i needed. I need to add an extension to the grease drain and then cut a hole in the harderbacker. I will use the 4 lower mouting holes in the bottom of the MAK to secure to hardibacker. In these securing locations i will back the hardibacker with wood to gv the screws something solid to attach to. The intake air will have a 5" duct running from a vent under the counter to supply air to the fan motor. The outake is going to have something simular that i will fab in place(havnt completly figured this out yet, maybe a lil channnel that cover the boottom and sides and then releases the smoke up into the hood?). The front will finish w a custom stainless cover leaving an opening for the controls on the pellat boss. Still working my way through this so any questions or comments will really help!
Another thingy or 2...under the MAK will be 48" stainless cabinet doors that will allow me to change pellets and grease bucket. I dont think i will need the slide access cuz i shop vac the dust out but i did make an access for it. The screws on the bottom that hold the auger chamber in place have had four holes made in the hardibacker so the MAK sit flush
