Best Pellets

Scooter summed it up beautifully! I have found the BBQers delight pellet gives me the most consistent performance bag after bag of all the pellets I have tried and that free shipping from BP is tough to beat in my neck of the woods. The best thing to do is try out different ones for yourself and see what works best for you.

Also just reminder of the rules of the road for everyone-

This is a commercial forum brought to you free of charge by Big Poppa Smokers. Feel free to discuss everything about any pellet related product, just not where to buy it.

Well unless you buy from Big Poppa. Which we have done the last couple of times. Honestly I like having pellets dropped on my doorstep.

Does the shipping not kill you on price? I know BP pays shipping but UPS brokerage fees must be crazy no?

Ya UPS brokerage fees are crazy, would be better if they shipped USPS but maybe with the weight they can't. That's why I usually just make big orders a couple times a year and stock up. If I really need something though I just order it and it costs what it costs.

Where in canada are you? If we are close enough maybe we could split a bulk shipment...

What is is downside of oil flavored pellets? Will the flavor carry over into another smoke/grill session?
What is the downside of using a no filler pellet such as 100% cherry for instance (assuming theyre even available)? Can ash buildup be removed without interruption the cooking?
Just curious is all.
Also, wondering if folks can REALLY tell which woods were used when tasting the food? I've always been dubious (except for mesquite). I heard or read somewhere that need to be smoked for over 6 hours to be ale to discern any unique flavors from the wood fuel in the food. I'm a newbie at all this

I see on the bbqdelight web page they are flavor wood. Are those the wood with the flavored oils in them?

No, on both counts. The small packets of BBQ pellets (used in foil packets) are 100% flavorwood, but bulk pellets used for pellet cookers is a 2/3 oak to 1/3 flavorwood blend. Flavor oils are NEVER used in BBQ'rs Delight. That's one of the reasons I like them so much.

In my area Bear Mt. pellets are the same price as BBQ'rs delight, Or to get a better price I have to order & pay shipping. It's actually cheaper for me to save my gas and have the BBQ'rs delight delivered to my door with free shipping.

This topic comes up every now and then and is somewhat subjective because some people have a harder time telling the difference between smokes than others. It's very personal and I believe a person's sense of smell plays a bigger role than we realize. Part of our sense of taste comes from what we smell so the way the wood smoke smells as your eating plays a role in what you taste.

Also, unrelated wood types will be easier to tell apart than related ones.

Example: Fruit woods & Nut woods give very different smoke profiles to me.

Hickory, Pecan & Black Walnut are from the the same family of woods (pecan is actually a species of hickory) so they have a similar flavor, but will vary in strength. Pecan = mild, Hickory = pronounced, Black Walnut = strong.

The best thing to do is try different woods and you'll end up with your own go-to wood flavors. And DON'T be afraid to mix and create your own blend. I love an apple/hickory or apple/black walnut mix.

Thanks!

What about oil "flavored" pellet though?

I don't use the flavored oil infused pellets, so I can't really say how well you can tell flavors from one another.

However, I just have a hard time believing that oil infused pellets (like Traeger pellets) would be as good because the flavor oil is now competing against a 100% ratio of the base wood rather than a flavorwood blended pellet.

I'd also think you'd most likely loose other characteristics associated with that flavorwood besides just the flavor. Apple & cherry, for example, are known to give a darker patina to smoked foods than oak or alder does.

The reason I prefer BBQ'rs Delight over Bear Mountain is I believe the flavors will be more discernible for two reasons:

1) BBQ'rs delight has a higher ration of flavor wood, and...

2) BBQ'rs delight are oak based. Oak has a more non-descript smoke whereas Alder imparts a slightly sweet smoke.

So, a higher ratio of flavor wood + non-descript oak smoke = more flavor difference.

That's my thinking at least! :p
