The judging criteria is to make it look so good I want to get in my truck and drive to your house for dinner!! :)

Thanks Deb for keeping me rooted in tradition! :)

Scooter,
You have raised the level of the competition. I like it! YOu have also created quite a chore for yourself. Good luck. YOu may need several FTs after this week is over.

Every judge here has their own criteria, I have judged a few times and have some things that come into play for me. I have a newbie tiebreaker and I'll consider a story or a charity cook. That is one of the great things about this contest, you never know who is going to win because everyone has different tastes/criteria. Very early on in the contest days when there weren't that many people entering and I had won a few times I received a pm from the judge - it said - don't be offended you aren't going to win this week, we need to spread the love around - I hadn't even posted my entry yet - I wasn't offended in the least - it's all in fun. I think that posting a point system kind of takes the fun out of it. I know if I was a newbie and on the fence about entering, reading that scoring system would make me run. I also feels like it kind of takes away from the rules of the contest (the contest which has been really cool lately because so many people have been playing:cool:)

This is a fun contest where everyone can show off their weekend cooks and win prizes from Big Poppa Smokers.

The only rules are:

You can cook with anything you want- gasser, charcoal, campfire, or pellet fired. Just incorporate pellets into the cook somehow and show how you used them.

This is a weekend contest- Starts on Friday and entries are due Sunday, Midnight Pacific time. If it's a holiday weekend Big Poppa can extend the entry period. No Library cooks. Judging happens the next day.

You win you judge! This weeks winner is next weeks judge.

Have fun! This isn't a cut throat comp, just a fun way to share what you're cooking and to see what everyone else is doing!

As I said every judge has their own way of judging and everyone needs to do it their way but I have one problem with the above --- posting that foil pouch pellet cooking gets a point reduction is just wrong. One of the most respected, helpful contributors on this forum posted for a very long time using only foil pellets. It would have been very huge loss to this forum if he felt that he wasn't as valuable as the person who has a pellet grill and hadn't stuck around.

Point taken, Thank you for your input Deb. I didn't mean to imply a members value to the forum was tied to pellet cooker ownership. Was only meant in fun as was the whole judging criteria thing. The main idea behind it was to help make it easier for me to pick a winner with so many good cooks who've been entering lately. I didn't stop to consider some would not enter the contest because I've given them a guide to what I'll be looking for when judging.

Scooter pm already sent before reading this....Lets try to keep this as open and inviting as possible...We have all worked so hard to get people to enter and I am afraid of new barriers over this.

Yes BP, I will judge using a less formal criteria in keeping with the tradition of the weekly contest. See the new criteria posted at the top. ;)

And thanks Art for the well wishes! I'll need it this weekend! :)

i wasn't going to enter this week contest. i'm not a comp cook or do i want to cook like one. it's about having fun. i cook pretty much the same thing every weekend because it makes me happy. weekends are fun time.... so i'm glad were going back to regular judging. the ppl who want to win try harder. and thats great. i love seeing all the great food everyone is producing. me, i just a old hippie surfer smoking stuff in the backyard on my grills and drinking my FT's.

Thanks Deb and Sparky for saying what I was thinking when I read it last night. Thanks for considering the feedback Scooter and going back to inclusive and fun!

That being said, I think a friendly 'backyard comp judging' thread would be helpful to those of us who are toying with the idea of entering some local competitions.. Whoever wants to participate can post photos of their 'turn in box', and the CJs here can chime in with how they would score them at a real KCBS/whatever contest.

Just a thought.

Thanks for reconsidering Scooter! I'm with the rest on the keep it fun and low key. I liked your system (except for the pouch deduction) and think it would be fun (if you're willing) to apply it to last year's contest entries and come up with a Top Ten from 2011.

There arent enough comp cooks here.....or judges. The only thing you can judge is appearance and that is the smallest factor in judging.
Also looking at the same four meats can get a little boring...The coolest part of our comp is that it showcases the development of the cooks and the possibilities of the pellet grill

STC, any aspiring competitors looking for appearance feedback can post their KCBS practice boxes on bbqcritic.com where you'll get the feedback from many CBJs. Post there and trust me, you will get lots of feedback.
I used to give feedback there myself. Don't have the time anymore.

All, thank you for your feedback! I will use a less formal framework of what I posted and have removed the deduction for a pellet pouch! Was only meant in fun but I can clearly see that the judging criteria I posted flys in the face of what the weekend cooking contest is about. Thank you Deb, spark, salmon, NCS, rip, tent, Art and others who have spoken their minds on both sides of the subject
