How To 1/2 Cover Flame Zone?

I've read that some of you cover half of the flame zone so you can do indirect, the direct cooking. What do you use to cover 1/2 of the flame zone and how do you use it in a cook, at what temps?

i don't own the new flame zone thing. doesn't your new flame zone have 2 1/2 covers to cover the little dimples?

What came with the MAK2 is just the dimpled flame zone pan. 2 half covers would be great! Are they available and do they work with the new flame zone pan?

Unless I'm mistaken, you should've gotten covers with the grill. Otherwise, you can't do indirect cooking. Call your dealer.

No, what us early 2012 adopters got was one full flame zone pan and one full blank pan, no covers for flame zone.

NorCal I've already asked Bob about this and he is trying to put a kit together for the few of us that only need covers/tool.

The 2012 2 Stars only have a full blank grease pan, or a full flame zone. I bought the new Mak 1 star flame zone, and while I love the flame zone I was disappointed that it doesn't have a full quick change blank grease pan. The flame zone has 2 covers that go over it, but it makes it very hard to tinfoil and on the long cooks I found that the grease creeps under the covers and into the flame zone holes. For now I'll just have to remove the flame zone and quick change kit and use the old blank grease pan on long cooks :/

So you think there will be a kit for 2012 MAK2 owners that didn't get the 1/2 flame zone covers? Any idea on timing?

Yes a kit for covers and tool. I'm hearing in the next few weeks, hopefully.
Very cool! I love to be able to smoke, then direct grill things like chicken and steaks, without having to swap out a whole bunch of stuff. I do it all the time in my Primo, but now I can do it in the MAK2 as well...very cool and can't wait! Thanks for the info.

You can always place the meat you want to smoke over in the smoking box to the right of your main cooking chamber. When finished smoking, bump the temp up and move the meat over into the main chamber where the full flame zone pan would be located.

Hey! I forgot about the Smoker Box! That's definitely another good options...I might try that...I'm sure it will work great! Thanks!

OK...I'm a little confused. Jut looked on the MAK sight and a full flame zone retro kit, including 2, 1/2 covers, for $299. I also got a note from Bruce at MAK after asking about a kit for 2012 MAK2 owners for 1/2 covers, "They’re available now. You can purchase them through our on-line store. The cost is $299.99, and includes free UPS shipping." That seems awfully expensive! Omahajs made it sound like the kit was going to be free to us who didn't already have it.

Hey NorCalQ, I don't believe I ever said free (don't work for MAK). As soon as I saw posts on the kit I asked Bob if the excluded parts would be available for us 2012 owners. His reply was that they would look at making a kit.

Since you and I already have the "kit" - the flame zone covers and tool, there's not much to it. If it comes, I will continue to use full blank pan for low and slow and full flame zone or 1/2 flame zone cover(s) depending what I'm grilling/cooking.

It's all good.

we are working on the covers for those that have a blank pan. It is not ready yet, still a few more things to work out. Not sure on price yet but we will let you know when we get that far. We try our best to not leave anyone behind on new products as we get them developed.

MAK DADDY, speaking only for myself, I love the full flame zone pan and the solid drip pan. I don't need no stinking covers for my flame zone pan. If I've got that full flame zone pan in odds are I am grilling something! Flame zone=Grilling. If I've got that solid drip pan in, I'm going low and slow.

I don't see what the fuss is all about. Well, actually I do but it has nothing to do with the design MD. :)

Using the "old" blank pan. I have all the pans made for the two star including the blank pan and use all of them . Honestly I think you will find the old blank and the new flame zone with the covers on will perform close but not exactly the same. Which is the great thing about having options.
